Further compression of KSVCDs possible?
 

I have six episodes of a TV show in KSVCD format (pal 352 x 288) which I encoded to each be 150Mb thinking that 6 x 150 = 800 (which it doesn't, obviously). So...I'm left with 6 episodes which are in total 910Mb. Is there anyway to further condense KSVCD files so that I can hopefully fit them all onto a CDR?

In addition, if I had an 800 Mb movie, it would take less than 800 Mb on the disc, but if I have several episodes (all encoded the exact same way) that add up to 800 Mb then the same rule doesn't seem to hold. Is there a reason for this?

Ok one thing I've tried is to use TMPGEnc to demux the KSVCD and recode the mp2 as MONO, 32000, 64.

This has saved me an average of 10Mb per episode. I'm still in the midst of doing this right now but I reckon I'm 60Mb better off. So 910-60 is 850. I still can't squeeze this onto an 80 CDR. I tried to recode the m2v file but TMPGEnc rejected it (although it plays fine).

I'll keep scratching my head... :?

Yes I thought of that and can do it with a couple of the episodes. But as I said, when I demux using TMPGEnc it tells me that it doesn't like trying to open the m2v file. Strange cos it will let me resample the audio as I said and let me mux it back with the m2v.

I thought I could somehow reduce the quality of the video slightly (as I did with the audio) to regain some Mb to squeeze it onto a CDR. Is there something other than TMPGEnc that will allow me to modify the quality of the m2v part? :?: :?:

Write some notes I will be fast :

- merge the ep with tmpgenc o obtain a 900MB mpeg.
- demux into m2v + mp2 with tmpenc
- use ifoedit to create vobs from this (author new dvd)
- use dvdshrink to compress the vobs the percentage you need
- use vobedit to demux the resulting vobs into m2v and mp2
- remux in mpeg using tmpgenc.

You are going on about VOBs etc...thats taking it back to the very start. Isn't there a way for me to just reduce the quality (and ultimately the Mb) of each m2v? These episodes do not have to be great quality but there are 6 of them and at present I can only squeeze 5 onto a CDR.

The whole process I described to you will take you 15 min MAX.

There is no tool that do that directly on mpeg. You need what is call a recoder, and they work only with VOBS, not MPEG (that is basically the same think but not exactly).

First try no video quality reduction. You don't need demultiplex for fusion an cut tmpgenc mpeg tools. Just try file, mpeg tools, fusion and cut, select mpeg2 super videoCD (VBR), add your file, edit, select disired cut, ok, select output file name, begin.
Later, if not enough reduction, demultiplex and reduce audio btr and later remux with bbmpeg if tmpgenc don't like your files.

Does dvdshrink compress better (without quality lose or with less quality lose) than our usual k(s)vcd method?

never used ifoedit or dvdshrink before - need to read up on them...so 15 mins max...hmmm...longer than that.

I really just thought you could load up the m2v part of a KSVCD and lower the quality of it then remux it with the mp2. I guess it isn't quite that simple.

Back to the drawing board.

(Anything to avoid starting the long drawn out encoding all over eh? Usually spend more time avoiding it than if you just redone it all but thats life). :lol:

rejig will do that. http://www.rejig.org/download.asp follow the guide on the rejig site. It works only with mpeg-2 files.

I have used rejig on low(k) bitrate .m2v and I could not attain good results.
cutterman is good for cutting pieces-credits, copmmercials, etc.

So you can use this method if you if want to make vcds not DVDs?As you mention , and from the guide " making a KVCD from scratch, it mentions that vobs are produced from DVD sources. So you still create vobs from mpg sources?I just want to straighten this out because I'm still new at this and I'm still confused about all these different conversions. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. What happens if the file is less than 900 mbs after you have lopped off the opening& closing credits? Is that okay? Like 850 mbs?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I gave rejig a try - nifty little piece of kit that. Done the trick for me. I chose two of the 6 episodes and compressed them to 70% so that brought the overall level just under 800 Mb - bingo!

What I love about this place is that there is ALWAYS a way! :wink: It just requires someone to put their thinkin cap on 8)
