Advantages of source dvd rather than divx?

Hi

For some bizarre reason if I use dvdx to create a d2v file it seems to want to take forever to convert it into a mpeg via TMPGenc. However if I take the intermediate step of first converting the dvd to a 2 gig divx with dr divx and then encoding the resulting divx, its actually quicker.

My Question is, should I just bear with the long conversion time from dvd to mpeg? Is the quality going to be significantly better? After all surely a full res 2 gig divx is going to be great anyway???
