Mencoder: illegal video stream errors

Im not even sure if this is in the correct forum but heres hopin sum1 can help me.Heres what Im doing-

1)join vobs using dvdlab to create one large vob
2)encode complete vob using mencoderme
3)Try to use the mpv as an asset in dvdlab

The mpv file always comes out looking great,I can open it with vlc,but when i try to use it for anything else i get an error that it is an illegal video stream, dvdlad recommends rewriting the headers but the fix header tool does nothing to it.So Im left with an mpv that looks great but i cant author. What am i missing? Any tips would be appreciated. All my divx/xvid encodes using mencoderme are coming out fine, with no problems authoring them, but any dvd sources are giving me this error.

It's not (or maybe it was :? ) Not sure. But it's more related to authoring. Post moved.

Can you use avicodec on that file to see if it is identified as a MPEG video stream ? And check all the info that avicodec will give to you to see if they are correct.

shibumi 05-18-2004 12:15 PM

Thanx phil, heres what avicodec comes up with-

File : 2.5 GB (2.5 GB), duration: 1:58:00, type: AVI, 0 audio stream(s), quality: 80 %
Video : 2.5 GB, 2491 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 704*576 (4:3), mpg2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Unsupported

The only thing that is wrong in the avicodec log is that it is 2.5GB,when in reality it is 2.05GB,and I can ignore the unsupported report as I use vlc for all mpeg2 stuff.Im at a loss at what to do with the file, dvdlab reports that it is not a 11172-2 or 13818-2 video stream and suggests changing the headers, tho i havent found any way to do this.I have tried to mplex using tmpgenc and it just reports it as an illegal video stream and refuses to accept it as a source.

Okay, heres what gspot came up with-not even sure what it means? Is there anyway to correct what it finds?

An invalid chunk has been encountered in the list containing the A/V frame data. Though not as serious as a corrupt header, it may still be serious enough to prevent the file from rendering correctly.

Details: While processing chunk /RIFF:AVI , found bad length value 4260036286 at file offset 0x83413a6a

Read agin more carefully !
You're mpv file (supposed to be an mpeg, does'nt it ?) is identified as an avi ! I don't know what you did, but you did it badly ;-)

EDIT: FYI this is what is shown for a file obtained with pack-shot :

File : 1.54 GB (0.0 B), duration: 1:49:50, type: MPG, 0 audio stream(s), quality: 80 %
Video : 3.46 GB, 4500 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 704*576 (16:9), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD), Supported

(note: the file is showned as MPEG1 but DVDlab correctly identified it as mpeg2 and does the authoring).

Thanx phil, yeah, never noticed the avi part should be shown as mpg,so that leaves me a little stuck, this is happening with all my dvd sources in mencodeme, all my avi conversions come out fine,so now it looks like this post should go back to the mencodeme foum, why is mencodeme producing mpeg2 files that are for some reason wrong?,heres my mencodeme log

The other problem im having with mencoderme is resizing,Ive tried to create a source as a d2v and use the usual mpegsource line, the i add a resize line-

LanczosResize(512, 542, 0, 2, 720, 572)
AddBorders(104, 17, 104, 17)

but when I go to encode the resolution comes back totally wrong ie 704x576 becomes 704x612 at 4:3 and 704x816 at 16:9.any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated,as I really want to get to grips with mencodeme as its producing such great results with avis, just not with dvd sources.

Hi there,
I haven't check this in deep detail but you're using an oudated beta build of mencoder.
Please download a newer build at www.mplayerhq.hu or at our latest CVS topic.
Some builds (and this one in question was not an official release as it says it's CVS) were know to have a lot of bugs with encoding mpeg streams.
Cheers

Thanx rds, your right! have just changed to a newer build and all is working wel now, problem solved. The only thing i ask is about the speeds of the builds, the one i use now gets around 23fps with no filters, but goes down to 3ps or slower as soon as i use any filters, where as the older build was givin me 25fps with the dvd filters on.Thanx anyway, will hunt round for a build that gives speed with working results :)
