Hi,

Great radio, François!
Just one question (I'm a curious guy, and that's why I love KVCD.net!:) ):
Who's voice of the kvcd.net comercials?

Salu2
Fabrice

california101radio 10-29-2004 03:54 PM

Hello Fabrice, :D

This spot was sent to me by Karl himself...I'm sorry but I can't tell you who is actually speaking on the US KVCD spot.

I'm just back home now, and I see my MP3 server in Paris is streaming like a B.S. server (and I can't get any remote access to see what's happening ! Jeasus!).

Ogg seems to be ok though...

I'm sorry if you couldn't get the James Taylor's performance without any problem...but as for me,...I'm approximatively 30 kms from the French MP3 server and I currently can't get a good stream...That's awefull.

That's all I can say by now,...I feel very disapointed about that.

If you're French (and I tink you are), please try and get the US MP3 or Ogg servers instead...and a BIG thank you for your words of encouragment. That's more than appreciated.

See you later,

François

california101radio 10-29-2004 05:04 PM

Hi Fabrice (sorry if I didn't see you were from Spain... ), and Hi to the community, :D

I could get a reset from the "!!X~&!!!-x company where I have my server in colocation (fast isn't it ??? Strange too...They acted within 10 minutes, when their average time for a simple reset has been 11 hours untill now).

Anyway,...all the streams are ok now; It was a security issue that was affecting the streams.

I had to load a temporary old playlist...So, I want to appologize for this inconvenience, and I'm gonna try to re-insert our KVCD spot once per hour along as the James Taylor's concert (5.00 AM GMT (Winter time)). I hope you could get this one in a good way.
That's a lot of time consuming, but I think it's worth it. I won't let technical issues break the West Coast radio! Lol

I just wanted to let you know about what really happened.

Take care,

François

PS : why do those problems systematically occur when you're not in front of your screen ??? Arggggg....

Hi François,
Ever heard of Murphy's laws
Cheers

california101radio 10-29-2004 06:23 PM

Hi rds_correia

Yeah...Lol...And what's more, I like this Funky song...(I could simply say I like Funk...lol).

....eeeeer...after some mistakes (like streaming in Mono etc,...) I can say it's done now. The concert and the spot have been added, along with everything for quite 15 hours...I think I had a long day enough for more, and I'll surely have more energy tomorrow, that's for sure. :D

I don't know if you're turning out your clock to a Winter one in Portugal as we do in France tonight (it should be 2 AM at 3 AM...) ?

Well,...the concert is planned to be streamed at 5 AM GMT (6 AM Paris time). Normally, it's not quite like that. The "rule" here (Lol) is to get the weekly performance when it's 8 PM in France and then,...8 PM in California. Well,...That was the idea.

Have a good night

François

rds_correia 10-29-2004 06:29 PM

Hi François :),
Yes, we're also turning the clock backwards one hour.
But to tell you the truth, I think that for us (KVCD users) it doesn't really matter at what time it's going to be broadcasted.
We don't sleep remember
Cheers

california101radio 10-29-2004 06:54 PM

Lol...Yep...I almost forgot that...

The Earth overview (in real time) on the main page of the site is really great!

Mind you,..."quite" as great as Karl's Avatar...LolLolLolLol...
Just thinking about that and it can make my day,...just try to figure out!...

...and no...I'm not suffering from any mental desease...LOL.

Well...I hope you could get the show (this is a good one...and the songs are among those best Soft Balads you sould surely heard on the radio, but in a different way this time)...And James Taylor is James Taylor.

I'd like to know if you, in Portugal, are used to listening to the West Coast radio via Ogg (long distance) or via the French MP3 server. I'm really wondering, as I know everyone here practically choose Ogg.

See you later, :D

Hi François :)
You know that the Earth globe on the kvc.org portal was Karl's avatar during, say 2 weeks.
That was the only time I saw Karl with an avatar other than "Timon" from "Lion King" :).

François, François...in a bar they pour whiskey...
In here we only pour Ogg
Just kidding with you ;-) but it's true I use the long distance one when I get the chance.
I've never used the French server.
C ya later :D

That's only that it look so 'american' and profesional, and not karl voice (it costs me 1 min. to understand that 'kay vi ci di' was KVCD! :) ), that I thought there had some 'radio' trick behind it...

:rotf:

For sure Fabrice, it's not my voice
It was done by a professional, about a year ago, and it aired for like a week on an Internet Radio Station (I can't even remember what station it was  )

@François,

Heard parts of the concert :D
I couldn't listen to it completely, because of local (house) chores :x
And BTW, today, I used Video Lan Client (VLC) to connect to your station, and multicast in the intranet, in a company I do consulting :!:
They were amazed at the music, and because I did a Single Cast To Multicast, only one stream was taken from your server, but there were about 4 computers listening to the multicast stream ( on a local Intranet IP 239.255.12.42 ) :D
No re-encoding at all :!:
Simply using VLC's multicast streaming options to multicast ;)
vlc -vvv http://195.140.141.200:8000/ --sout udp:239.255.12.42 --ttl 12

Examples here: http://www.tldp.org/REF/VideoLAN-Quickstart/x536.html

Hey, maybe they will consider my idea of puting California 101 radio on their "Background Music System", because this way, they only have to "attach" to a single stream, and broadcast locally on the intranet a small PC, which will output the audio to the company's telephone "On-Hold" system, and background music :)
I'm pushing the issue ;) ;) ;)

california101radio 10-30-2004 05:01 AM

Hi you all, :D

I hope everything's fine for you. Thanks for posting rds_correia, Fabrice and Karl.
First,..Ok,...I see people really seem to prefer Ogg to the ancient MP3 here (mind you, this doesn't surprise me as the community is a technical encoding stuffs oriented one and Ogg is a better "thought" technology than the MP3 one).

Next, that's ok Fabrice...You're French...but living in Spain...Lol (I was wondering if I was right or wrong about that...LOL). I guess you live up there for work, and not for vacations, right?

Next,...Thanks Karl for the info about the American voice (mind you, we still don't know what Station was airing or streaming the spot...Lol) and, most of all, for inciting this company to get the stream through a "relay" which would distribute the signal to all their Intranet and, also for them to get the West Coast radio for their Hold on system; That'd be effectively a great huge idea!!! :D
(just tell them about the Toto's song : "Hold The Line"...live...it lasts more than 10 minutes,...so that could give them the time to drink a soda at the drink-machine, before they actually make up their mind and take the phone call. LOL). 8)

So sorry about your "house schedules"...Lol. Hey,...That's a Familly' life.

Salut Fabrice, :D

"Femme ou Internet...Il faut choisir..." LOL

I was telling Fabrice that we often have to make choices, and right choices if ever possible between our wife and the time we can sometime spend on the Internet...LOL (with a a blink of an eye to one of our TV/Radios spots,...saying the same thing, but concerning serious things : "drinking or driving").

No need to ask you what kind of job you do; I bet you're in the computer industry...
(mind you,...I could be wrong...(re)Lol...).

Hasta Luego (à bientôt si Dieu le veut...)

@Anyone,

I'm using WinAmp v505 for streaming California101 and after buffering
two times playing a song, WinAmp displays the song and (-2:-11).
I have to click on the Play button to keep it going. Then after two
buffering the same thing happens again. Does anyone know what's
happening. I'm using POTS line (56k modem), Windows 2K Pro,
1.8GHZ processor, 512MB memory.

california101radio 10-30-2004 07:41 AM

Hi black prince,

Thanks for telling me what's happening to you while listening to California-101, I really appreciate that, and that's very kind.
Your hardware looks pretty good but you're using a RTC connection and I curently stream at 128 Kbps...so,...all these buferizings are normal,...as the delivery is too high for your bandwith limit.

Did you try Ogg by any chance ? The average is 64 Kbps...and it might work for you (though not really adapted too... ).

I know I should stream for low/usual bitrates (56Kbps is still the average in the world)... But I already spend a lot of money for the station to stay alive and grow...

You can be sure of one thing anyway : I WILL try to find a way to fix that problem (surely with an Ogg solution...(like the one Karl told me about a few days ago)...or, while using a MP3 Pro pack...I don't know...I really need to get opinions, comments on my site (forum, mails, etc...) to see if it's worth it for everyone).

Have a nice day :D

François

Hi california101radio,

I'll try ogg and see if that works. Your station takes me back to those
Good Old days and when I can get some music, it's really great!!
Keep up the good work. :)

california101radio 11-01-2004 10:36 AM

Hi, :D

I checked the messages but I couldn't answer earlier...

Thanks for keeping the interest to the West Coast radio.

To black prince,

Thank you for your kind words of encouragment. :D
Ogg can effectively be seen as an alternative solution to the problem you are experiencing...But,...just try to figure out I got the same issue today (using Winamp, I got the same type of error than you) ! Argggg...My best Ogg experience today didn't surpass 50 minutes...Otherwise, it bugs within a couple of minutes (if not seconds).

So,...to all of you,...listening to California-101 via Ogg (that is to say...everybody on this part of the message board...), please tell me if you're experiencing any issue.
I sent an emergency message to my friend at mediacast1 30 minutes ago, but this day is a particular day in France and I think it's just the same in the U.S.A. (noone, or practically noone, is working). So, the delays might be longer!

Anyway,...we should have a clue about that thing and maybe a relatively fast fix of the problem. (tomorrow or the day after, at the latest).

To Fabrice and Jorge,...Lol

No,...I'm not a spy nor a secret agent... But I'm used to watching "Charmed" when I have the time to do so (we don't have much to watch on TV in France anyway...lol). So, I guess "I took some magical habits" along the way, as time was passing by...Lol

To everyone who'll come over this topic, don't forget you can request a song whenever you want to, and that the next concert is Friday...So, don't waste a minute and feel free to ask for your favourite Bands/Artists at http://www.california101radio.com/forum3 .

Hi,

I got some news about what could currently occur with the OggVorbis stream.
There might be a new version of the dsp I'm currently using with my automation software.
I have to check that (those tools are "competitive" ones,...therefore,...that's a tricky one to run the whole works sometimes).

Be sure I'll keep you informed about that as soon as I could.

Later,

François

california101radio 11-04-2004 09:24 AM

Hi you all, :D

I finally got news about this Ogg issue...and...yes...it's a matter of dsp (a new release should be used there).
I checked (though it's harder to keep "traces" of the ones who listen to Ogg the way it is than the ones who gets the MP3 stream) that some people didn't seem to experience any problem, while some others definitively did (and might get this error message Black Prince was the first to talk about (thank you black prince  ).

Untill now, nothing has been changed though as the station also seems to get some extra listeners ( Let's cross fingers... ), but I've got the new dsp "handy".

I am going to wait for a special moment (or post something on the site) to tell the stream will be down for some improvements for a short period of time. The trouble is that my automation system might be uncompatible with this new version (coming from a concurent in the streaming industry)...

To be continued... ;) Thanks for joining the site, posting, and...listening.

It's really appreciated.

Have a great day,

François

Hi François, I finally got round to listen to your excellent radio station (I've been really busy of late).

I love the music you play some great tunes a really great tunes.

Im using WinAmp 5.04 Pro and I have no problems at all receiving the station.

Thank you François for such a great radio station. :)

california101radio 11-05-2004 05:36 AM

Hi Zyphon, :D

Thank you for telling me you don't have any problem while listening from the UK (I guess you were talking about the OggVorbis stream, weren't you?).
If this is the case, that's good news. ;)

And,...of course,...Thanks so much for the kind words. 'Hope you'll come over soon again (both on the site and on the stream).

Have a great day,

Hi, :)

As promised, here is some news about the Ogg stream of California-101.
The dsp problem should be over...and I personaly could stay more than one entire day connected to it (this last night...); A rare thing, comparing to the problems I was also experiencing...and the "long distance" between the server and my PC.

Please, feel free to tell me if you still get problems, like the one we talked about a few days ago.

As for low bitrates, I'm still thinking about the better way to do that at this point...That's a tricky one, mostly when I take a look at the big stations, streaming in all kindda bitrates....That's really food for though. lol

Ogg Vorbis at Q=-1 (~45Kbps) sounds better than a 128Kbps MP3, if the source is not a re-encode. I sent you something via Private Message, at 45Kbps :)

Edit: Hey, Just heard the KVCD ad ;)

california101radio 11-16-2004 08:40 PM

Great news... 8)
Thanks for the file...It is effectively a real good one at 45kbps nominal.

I totally agree as for the fact it musn't be re-encoded...but, will there be enough people on a low bitrate??? I would like to set up another new one, but...

I'll keep the board informed about that anyway. You can bank on it. ;)
