Blank Discs: Quick mode vs. Full mode to erase on a CD-RW??
 

Hello, I have been using CD-RW's and I was just wondering when it comes time to erase the data on the disc, which mode is better for the disc (Quick mode or Full mode) to last longer since most of the CD-RW's only let you erase them 999 times?

Use quick mode, unless you have some privacy issue, and you want to completely blank the disk.
The "Quick" mode only erases the TOC. The actual data on the rest of the CD is still intact.
The full mode wipes everything, but takes a very long time to erase.

(T)able (O)f (C)ontents. If you do a quick erase, and you give away your CD-R, a cracker can actually retrieve the data from the "data" area" of the CD-R.No. Say a CD-R can be written/erased about 1000 times.
If you do 1000 quick erases, you've reached the limit on the TOC, rendering your CD-R useless, even though the rest of the CD-R space has not been touched.
So it doesn't matter if you do a quick or a full erase.
Just use quick for your video CD-Rs, and full, if you plan on giving a CD-R away to someone ( and you want to make sure it's really blank ;) )

This is an AVERAGE. There isn't any counter written on the disc that decrease from 999 to 0 and then the CD explodes :-)

In five seconds this CD will be destroyed.

2. Can this be done on a HD or iPod?

I'm asking these questions, because if you guys recall the virus that I got in my computer couldn't be DELETED :evil:

Because that stupid virus, and my stupid decision to back up my 2 year old son's pictures only in the stupid iPod, I lost a whole year of memories (pictures & videos.)

Is there anyone that can please help me, I feel very sad; but I'm also very, very mad at MYSELF :evil: :evil: :!: :twisted: :twisted:

By using a raw binary reader. Kind of hardware that cops use to make talk your PC years after you erased the datas :-D

Of course yes ! For HD is far easier than for the CD (no need of a specific hardware - they are a LOT of software that restore the datas even after a reformat of your disc !) FYI data can be restored even on broken pieces of disc.

What do you mean ? You erased the disc ? (format or something like this ?)
Then your data are still on the disc ! Find on the net "filescavenger" or "easy data recovery" (and they are other - google a little on "data recovery").

Although I haven't successfully recovered anything, I'm still going to keep on trying.
I have tried a few different programs (including file scavenger), and I can see the files that I want to recover but when it does "recover it" I cannot preview it or anything that. I cannot see the images nor can I read any of my other files.

1) Do you know what can I do to fix this problem?


I'm currently working with a program called Active@ Undelete.

2) Do you know if this is a good program?

That sounds like a bug I saw in some filescavenger version. Sene me your email by pm and I'll send you the version I found that works correctly.

OK, I got the file, extract it, but when I was going to set it up I got a message saying:

16 bit Windows Subsystem (that's the title bar)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.



I uninstalled the other software that I was using, restarted the computer, and ran Norton System Works and nothing.

I also try to install another version of File Scavenger that I had previously installed, but it gives me the same massage.

Do you have any idea what's going on?

I did not understand what is the file that give you such problem. What type is it supposed to be ?

OK, I figured out the last problem that I had. :)
But it doesn’t matter what program I use I can only see data’s name and I can “recover it” but when I choose to preview the picture or extract one of my rar files I won’t do anything. :x

1) Does anybody have any idea why?

2) Is there other program or other way for me to recover my old data?

You probably continued to use the disc, right ? Then new datas have override old ones and thus, they are lost.

What filescavenger tells you about integrity of the data before you recover them (good, poor) ?

Note: you restored from NTFS or FAT ? And the second disc you use is formated the same way ?
