KVCD and Playstation 3

Hi all,

For people that are a little involved in new HD format (HD-DVD, Blu-ray), you probably know that the Playstation 3 is one of the best BD player on the market when it comes to read an old fashion DVD with it. The only chalenger is the Tohsiba HD-DVD player (XE1 in France, XA2 in N/A I think). but it is twice the price.

All this to introduce my subject : I bought a PS3 today and tested my KVCD/KDVD on it.

1/ the PS3 doesn't read any VCD or SVCD, so bye bye KVCD :-(. Nevertheless, after one hour watching a BD on my 50" rearprojector I had difficulties to return back to DVD, so I don't imagine to look at a KVCD once again :).

2/ it reads anything in KDVD : PAL / NTSC, standard and not standard resolution, regular or long GOP. Only the 528x... resolution is not supported (was not either on my Sony DVD Stanadalone)

3/ be carefull for people using the HDMI connector : there is almost NO overscan. That was not the case with the DVD standalone that used also the HDMI connector (upscalling player). But with the PS3 I can see a black border arroudn all my KDVD as I encoded them all with a 16px overscan.

(4/ other thing : it reads all h264 and WM9 video, SD or HD, with sound in AAC or MP3).

Hi Phil,

I think it's possible to install linux on PS3. So maybe it will be possible to read KVCD with something like mplayer.

cheers,
