Clatronic DVD 491

Hi,

My DVD player is the Clatronic DVD 491. It is a good player - it plays VCD, SVCD, MP3's and is sold multi-region. I encode in PAL usually. It plays the classic KVCD template without problems. I have never posted but I have been encoding for some time now at 352x576 with some 704x576 also. I did not manage to play the new templates with a very high bitrate however - specifically the KVCDx3 ones (both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 have not worked). I believe it might mostly be the high bitrate which is causing the problem. I did try some modifications to KVCDx3 with no luck e.g. reducing the image width etc. I believe that reducing the maximim bitrate might work (see below).

All these have been successful:
KVCD-CQ-352x288-PAL
KVCD-CQ-352x576-PAL
KVCDx2-CQ(PAL)-1CD
KVCDx2-CQ(PAL)-2CD
KVCDx2-CQ-704x576-PAL-1/2CD
SKVCD-352x576-PAL

The new KVCDx2-CQ-704x576-PAL-Plus template has not worked due to
the high bitrate.

I modified the latter template as follows and got it to work:

CQ- Max bitrate 1800- Min bitrate 300 - Quality 65. Enable padding remained ticked.
P and B picture spoilage remained at 0.

I hope this helps somebody with a similar player or problem.

I made an experiment - I saved the new matrix from the new x3 templates in TMPGENC and after loading the classic KVCD template, I switched to that saved matrix. The result did not work correctly - part of the screen was left empty i.e. the picture did not fill my screen. I don't know why this happened.

Hi cweb,

Thanks for the info :D
You could try the KVCDx3 and change to the alternate resolution 544x576.
Just make the change in the template and see if this will work. If it doesn't, you might want to try KVCDx3 MPEG-2.

Hi Kwag,

Thanks for the reply. I will try that.

Meanwhile I tried some further experimentation. I normally always use the Tmpgenc (plus) Wizard rather than directly loading the templates. Now I just tried KVCD-CQ-352x576-_PAL_-PLUS.mcf (the one with the 2500 max bitrate) through the Wizard, on the same sample and it worked this time. I don't know why the more advanced way of loading the template gave me a problem yesterday, it must have been something I did then.

I'll retry the KVCDx3's both MPEG-1 and 2 to be certain, and through the Wizard - with the default sizes and then with the size you suggested.

The x3 templates did not work unchanged -- I have yet to try the size you suggested.

Mpeg1 did not give any picture while Mpeg2 gave me a grey screen with spaced out white horizontal lines...

With the horiz. size you mentioned, the mpeg1 kvcdx3 gave me a centred image with black bars on both sides (I have center set - perhaps that's why)
- on the other hand the mpeg2 kvcdx3 worked fine.

Is it possible to use the new matrix with the 'classic' old kvcd template?
Or will it give problems (in terms of quality)?

If you use the new matrix and GOP on the old templates, the result will be the same as if you use the new PLUS templates
