Apex 1500 + KDVD Templates Version 2.0 Issues
 

*EDITED, new stills are captured off the dvd player when I encoded and authored it to a DVD*

I have an Apex 1500 DVD player(the original one that could be made region free with software only). I've been capturing files and trying to figure out the best quality/space saving way to burn it onto a dvd and able to play on the tv(rules out divx).

Anyway I tried the KDVD Templates and it doesn't play correctly. I don't know how to describe it but here are some screenshots captured from the way its played off my dvd player(all NTSC):

Correct way it should look, (encoded in mpeg 2, 1500kbs, 352x240)

No settings were changed on the templates themselves except I encoded video and audio together.

Hi lanevo7,

For the KDVD Full D-1, you didn't encode anamorphic. That's why it looks shrinked compared to the first image. For the KDVD Half D-1, maybe your player doesn't support half D-1 resolution :idea: . It shouldn't be the case, because the resolution is defined in the DVD standard :roll:

Wow fast replies, great. I burned the files using nero. I have tried burning it as vcd, svcd, and raw mpeg files. All have the same results as shown in the pictures.

But wait :!: KDVD templates are for DVDs NOT for VCDs :!:
You said you tried the KDVD templates, so I assumed you burned to a DVD-R :!:
How did you encode :?: What did you encode: AVI or .d2v :?:
Need more info to know what you aree doing :roll:

I am capturing a series off my VCR using virtual dub. The codec I'm using is pic video's MJPEG codec set at quality 18. So I am encoding an AVI. It takes very long to author and then burn even a small file, so I figured burning it to a cd would work. It worked for the mpeg2 I encoded with tmpgenc's dvd templates. I'll try with a dvd-rw, if I get the same results I'll repost.

Ok, now I encoded KDVD files, authored it using UDMF 2, and burned it to a DVD-RW. I edited the stills to show the new captures. I still have issues with it having two black borders.

Could you post your script? What are you encoding? Is it Wide screen material?

Script? I didn't use any script. All I did was go to tmpenc, select your template and set it so it would encode video + audio together. I am encoding a series that I am capturing off VHS. Its 4:3 NTSC.

Set the "Video arrange method" in TMPEG to "Full screen"

Edit: You'll never get good quality encoding this way. Not even with the standard TMPEG templates. You should use an avisynth script and properly "Inverse Telecine" your captured material. Please search for "IVTC" (Inverse Telecine) and "FitCD" so that you can process your captures with a script and filters.

I thought Inverse telecine should only be used with movies that were originally filmed in 23fps but were changed to 29fps. Im not sure that the series I am capturing applies.

Yes, it depends on the movie, but a lot of series are shot FILM.

Thanks for all your advice. I'm starting to use avisynth now, but I really just wanted to test out your templates to see how it is. I followed your directions for video arrange method to full screen and I still get the same results. any other suggestions?

Then there's a problem somewhere else because that is the way the standard TMPEG templates are set too :!: If you encode with one of the stardard templates in TMPEG, you should get the same result. Have you tried that :?:
