KVCD on Pioneer DV-440

I am very new to KVCD - it sounds amazing and I am dying to try it.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I followed all the steps correctly so am trying to troubleshoot why the CD's I make aren't working in my player.

Step 1 - check player compatability.

I don't see this model (Pioneer DV-440) on the comatability chart. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Many thanks!

G'day Icarus,

The Pioneer players will play the kvcd templates but with a few tweaks and you will have to do some testing cos they are all slightly different.

I have the DV 344 and it will play mpeg 352x240/288, 704x480/576 and 720x480/576 as long as the min bitrate is set to 650 (if it isnt then the audio pops).

It can play all resolutions and min bitrate is not an issue if I encode in mpeg1 but burn as svcd.

Encode as MPEG-1, burn as SVCD

Thanks Urban Tec,

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "Encode as MPEG-1, burn as SVCD". Does this mean everything is as if it were MPEG-1 EXCEPT VCDEasy, when I should select "SVCD" instead of VCD 2.0?

Exactly, al this does is put an SVCD header on the disk so the player plays as if it were mpeg2. Let me know how it works out.

Pioneer DV-440 - not compatible?

Bad news...

No matter how I burn it (VCD 2.0 w/PBC, VCD 2.0 w/o PBC, SVCD w/PBC, SVCD w/o PBC), the HBO-cap.mpg file I downloaded from the sample page will NOT work on my Pioneer DV-440 :(

FYI:

The file is:

29.97 fps
352x480
MPEG1

I figure if I can't get the sample file to work, I probably won't be able to get any of my own files to work :(

I know that standard VCD and SVCD files play fine on this machine (I have burned many myself!).

Any other words of wisdom?

Did you download and burn the KVCD Compatibility CD image version 2
It's available on the "What's hapenning" section.

Success! No comes the hard part!

Kwag:

Thank you so much! Everything worked, except KVCDx3 the video only shows up on the left side of my screen.

The 704x480 version looks amazing (!!), so I know that is the one I want to use (unless you know how I can get KVCDx3 to work!).

The problem is now that I know my hardware isn't to blame, how can I troubleshoot what I am doing wrong? It's either in the encoding or the burning, or both! Let's remove the encoding from the equation for the moment and start with the burning.

I downloaded the samples from the sample page and tried to burn them a number of different ways with easyvcd, but all I get on my TV is a blank screen (although it works fine in PowerDVD).

So.. I must be doing something wrong in EasyVCD - can you tell me step by step how I can burn the sample .mpg in EasyVCD - now that I know all versions of KVCD seem to work in my player!

Many thanks!
-Icarus

p.s. Now that I know it is a burning problem, feel free to move this thread to the proper forum 8)

Icarus3000 02-23-2003 05:50 PM

Oh yeah.. I suppose you can add Pioneer DV-440 to the compatibility chart!

Good to see you had some success, my player does the same with the kvcdx3 setup but burning as svcd fixed it for me.

The DV440 must be different again from other pioneers but at least the standard resolutions are working for you, thats good news.

Icarus3000 02-23-2003 07:39 PM

It's good news if I can get Kwag to encode and burn my videos for me

So far I end up with coasters when I try to do it myself! :?

There is a bit of a learning curve when you first start, I found CD/RW's invaluable :)

Where is it that you are having trouble ? I see that you have experience with creating std vcd etc

Also have you seen this guide by Black Prince, its hard to go wrong if you follow his steps.

Icarus3000 02-23-2003 11:04 PM

I thought I was following the guide but I'll try again. Part of my problem may be trying to squeeze in a few minutes of testing into my day. Wish I had more time to work on this!

Yes it does take time, lots of trial and error.

Icarus3000 02-24-2003 01:06 PM

Success!

Just to let you know I was able to burn the sample .mpg and get it to work in my player.

The only thing I think I did different was before I created a .bin with VCDEasy and burned with CD-Mate. This time I created a .bin with VCDEasy and burned with Nero. Not sure why Nero worked, and CD-mate didn't, although it is possible I did something else differently as well.

Thanks for all your help!

Next step.. Encoding... I have a lot of questions about that too!

Jellygoose 02-24-2003 03:06 PM

@Icarus: If the 704x480/576 sample worked for you I'm sure KVCDx3 will work too... You just have to change the resolution to 544x480/576. I'm pretty sure that every player that supports 704x480 will also play 544x480...

Anyone else have a Pioneer DV-440

Well, I guess I've been making KVCDs and SKVCDs for almost 2 years now :)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else out there has a Pioneer DV-440. And more specifically, if they have been able to get (K)SVCDs encoded in NuEnc or FreeEnc or QuEnc to work on their players?

Look for my posts in the the NuEnc thread to see the backstory of the issue I am having.

Thanks!

Dialhot 12-22-2004 05:59 PM

If I remember well, DV-440 has a big trouble with bitrates. I'm not surprised then that libav library does not suit this player.

Icarus3000 12-23-2004 11:51 AM

Dialhot:

Do you know what specifically is the issue with libav?

Peter Cheat is struggling to figure out what it is exactly about the libav output that my player doesn't like.

Every indication is that the output from NuEnc is within the parameters I set (min: 600, max: 2300 - same as I set for TMPGEnc), but player freezes every few seconds with NuEnc output and is fine for TMPGenc output (both in KSVCD format).
