KDVD Standalone Compatibility Samples

Hi all,

You always wonder what are the capabilities of your standalone regarding to KDVD ? I also do.

So, I compiled a "KDVD Samples" volume. This DVD contains a movie sample about 1'20" long encoded in :

#1 - 352*288 MPEG2 - 4/3
#2 - 352*576 MPEG2 - 16/9
#3 - 480*576 MPEG2 - 16/9
#4 - 544*576 MPEG2 - 16/9
#5 - 704*576 MPEG2 - 16/9
#6 - 704*576 MPEG2 - 16/9 - LONG GOP (25 insteed of 15)

The NTSC volume contains a 43' long video encoded in :

#1 - 352*240 MPEG2 - 4/3
#2 - 352*480 MPEG2 - 16/9
#3 - 480*480 MPEG2 - 16/9
#4 - 544*480 MPEG2 - 16/9
#5 - 704*480 MPEG2 - 16/9
#6 - 704*480 MPEG2 - 16/9 - LONG GOP (25 insteed of 15)

All samples where done with the same script, using CCE (with Vmesquita template) except for the last one that was done with TMPGENC. This way you can compare also the two encoders if you want to ;-)

Last : I adapted the Q factor (or CQ for last one) of each sample in order to have exactly the same filesize. That means that all samples above lead the same target size on the end. So you can compare too the visual quality of each resolution for a given target !

I put the sample on edonkey :

KDVD Standalone Compatibility Samples - PAL.rar (141.01 MB)
KDVD Standalone Compatibility Samples - NTSC.rar (61.27 MB)

I also put them under Konspire, into my own channel KVCD.net - Dialhot's channel.

Note1: sample #1 is actually 4:3 but declared as 16:9 by the authoring software (DVD-lab) that couldn't mix both 4:3 and 16:9 on the same disc.

Note2 : audio is 128 Kbit/s - MP2 but it does not really matter.

FINAL NOTE : My standalone (pioneer D454) plays everything :-D. I'm quite sure a lot of standalones will do.

vmesquita 02-22-2004 07:39 AM

Dialhot,

This was really a great idea, now everyone can know what their stand-alones are up to in DVD. But just one side note: the official KDVD uses standard resolutions/GOP. I believe it's important to make this statement because a lot of people in the past have not used KVCD for it being non-standard, and now in KDVD, you can keep the standard and yet have very high quality (and minutes) on DVD. And of course, if the player supports non-standard resolutions... Let the fun begin. :D :D

For sure, that is why I add also a test with non standard GOP, encoded with tmpgenc.

Because if your standalone support all the resolutions (like my TWO ones, I just did test on the Philips DV737) and the long GOP _and_ if you did you KVCD in MPEG2 then you can put all your old KVCD on a DVD simply by resampling the audio to 48 khz :!:

Next test to do : check standalone capabilities with MPEG1 streams ! :-)

I wanted to test the new official DL channel for KVCD but didn't manage to make it work yet. Kwag just gave me some hints and I will test as soon as my current DL are finished (within an hour) :-)

BTW I will make a smaller NTSC project.

Note : it is not an image but a VIDEO_TS directory that you have to burn with whatever you use to.

@andy
I'm on razorbak2 as server and you can find ly source there. For the next 23 hours, the direct link to my PC will be :

ed2k://|file|KDVD.Standalone.Compatibility.Samples.-.PAL.rar|147855357|1AD1FAAF7D927FDEA26E8C0F2F39393 0|/|sources,81.51.27.129:4892|/

Edit: I put it on konspire. Under "KVCD.net - Dialhot's channel".
I hope I understood how this stuff works

andybno1 02-22-2004 11:01 AM

I'm not using edonkey as I can never seem to get it connected to the net but I am using a program called shareaza which can handle edonkey links and I finally got sources for it to download from woo hoo hehehehe

I set you a friend slot. So you will continue to UL till the end of the file (as you are my only client at the moment :-p))

andybno1 02-22-2004 12:06 PM

Lagoon 02-22-2004 12:16 PM

Hum gotta try that 544x576 as I have a pioneer DV444 it may works , 528x576 didnt though.

I've tried MPEG1 480x576 and it works fine on DVD

Just checked my subscriptions, and your "channel", and I see the file "KDVD Standalone Compatibility Samples - NTSC.rar" being downloaded
File size 62,745.50 so that should be here later tonight ( because I'm also running MUTE with about 20 download streams  )

Karl, can you turn this post into a "Announce" or "Sticky" post ? Thank you. Or perhaps put a message under "What's happening"

I didn't even have the time to post a message :-)

Note: tell me if there is an error because I didn't have the time to test it on the standalone. I just whatched the result on the PC.

Can somebody help me...it's not working for me!

i get "receiver key does not exist for channel: kvcd"

or if i click use existing key i get

"receiver key does not exist for channel: kvcd"

kwag 02-23-2004 07:45 PM

Hi Pascal,

If it's the first time you run Kast, let it run for some minutes.
You should see some IP addresses when you click on the "hosts" link.
After a while, click on the "catcher" link, and you should see the KVCD channels. Then simply click on the "subscribe" link besides the channel you want.
That's it :!: :D

Pascal 02-23-2004 08:09 PM

Okay, i should have been more patient...

now, how do i download the file? (ntsc)

i usually figure things out myself.

Once you subscribe to a channel, the download starts automatically, once there are broadcasts on line.
So if you subscribed to Dialhot's channel, you should be receiving the images right now :!:

-kwag

Dialhot 02-23-2004 08:12 PM

Just subscribe to my channel and everyhting that is in it will be downloaded automatically. You can stop the PAL file if you don't want it.

Pascal 02-23-2004 10:02 PM

How long does it normally take?

Have you thought of using Bittorrent?

Maybe 2 to 5 minutes, the first time you connect. Did you forward or open your firewall's port 6085 to your machine?

Yes, but the problem with BT or other clients, is that you would have to constantly search for what you want :!:
With Kast, once you subscribe to a channel you want, things come in automatically.
So every time something new is sent on a channel, you automatically get it.
This concept is non-existent on any other file sharing application.

But if I don't want something and I delete it, it come back again into my pc?

I don't think so :!:
Unless the content of the channel is changed by the broadcaster.
I think that's the way it works.

-kwag

Pascal 02-24-2004 11:11 AM

Unfortunately it doesn't support resuming!!!

rds_correia 02-24-2004 11:25 AM

Oops
That's a big MUST these days...
Got to try it and see if it happens to me too.
C ya
