I tried this myself over a year ago, and trust me, WINE is VERY unstable
This is not ready for prime time yet.

Hmmm, you said you tried that 1 year ago Karl.
In 12 months many things can change and even improve.
On the other hand I tend to share the same oppinion with you.
This time WINE won't be the way.
We'll just have to wait for a proper port of Avisynth to Linux.
Cheers

Yep, but not WINE
It has been getting better in the last ~7 years, but still "experimental"

Yes. AviSynth will be painfully slow on WINE, and not to mention that it will be an achievement if anyone can go through encoding without a crash
I'm almost sure that at least one out of every 5 encodes, one will surely be a crash
Imagine: "AviSynth + filters + Encoder" chain emulated on a layer (WINE) that emulates another layer (Win32) that emulates another layer (U*IX->Windows lower level calls)
Might as well encode in Windows

Linux users should wait for AVS3.0 as it seems that it will support Linux directly. Means also OSx (imho) could enjoy the power of avisynth.

If it's going to support Linux I hope this means it (and its plugins) won't need to be compiled in MS Visual C anymore... That would be good news even if you stick to Windows.

@Phil,
OT
You bet!
I love having all these Santas in the forum in this time of the year .
Too bad my Avatar doesn't look that good with a red Santa hat .
I wish the portal and the forum theme could also be tweaked with Xmas stuff...
/OT
Cheers

I was using linux with avisynth and HC until few month ago (when my wife decide to thow all that pinguin stuff to the dustbin... ), and it was working perfectly! I don't know how it work with freebsd
That's true that I was only able to use 2 version of Wine (and I was also using IE within Wine!), because all the others one was buggy.

Dont you remeber my post about hc and Linux?

CU,
Fabrice

Hmm.
I use avisynth+filters+hcenc on wine on desktopbsd on 1,5celeron 370M on my laptop (low end one) and I get ~19fps for full DVD res, while the same combination on win2k on p4 3,2 ht gets ~30fps, so aint so bad for this painful chain
And none of them are crashed so far :finger crossed:
