Need to replace Nero or Roxio ? - List of Free CD/DVD Burning Software

I cannot install Nero onto my computer without getting errors. Don't ask me why, the Nero support people can't figure it out either, and will be refunding the money I paid for Nero 9 reloaded. My question is what is as good as
Nero or better. I basically , just burn movies, music, and convert MP4's and burn them to disk. Any recommendations please?

The reason Nero works so poorly now is because they try to cram too much crap into a single program. So instead of looking for one big fat program as replacement software, look instead to lean dedicated tools:

PurposeBest SoftwarePriceDownload
burning audio CDBurnAware FreeFree!http://www.burnaware.com/downloads.html
burning data CD/DVDCDBurnerXPFree!http://cdburnerxp.se/en/download
copying CD to CDCDBurnerXPFree!http://cdburnerxp.se/en/download
burning authored DVD-Video*ImgBurnFree!http://www.imgburn.com/?act=download
converting AVI/MP4/MKV to DVDConvertXToDVD$49 USD*http://www.digitalFAQ.com/go/vso-software.fr/

Notes:

* "Already authored" means the DVD-Video authoring was done in another program, and the VIDEO_TS folder set, or the ISO discs image, simply needs to be burned to a blank disc. The program listed here does not author video.

* Sometimes VSO has special sales or coupons. I've seen it sell for as little as $35. That's a bargain, see what the software does -- makes life easier by converting video easily, having very high MainConcept-like quality, and accepting manu input formats. It's worth it, as none of the free tools are this good.

* "Shrinking" DVDs is often referred to (technically) as the process of transcoding DVD9- to DVD5-sized DVD-Video. It makes a dual-layer retail/commercial DVD or otherwise fit onto a standard 4.38GB ("4.7GB") blank disc. This can be useful for fair-use backup, and included several interesting options (Reauthoring, for example), and even has uses outside of "backup".

Admin,
Thanks for your March 2010 recommendations.
It's now February 2012. Are there any better ones now?

I would like to suggest IMGBurn as a phenomenal addition. It works as excellent tool to burn data CD's, ISO's and much more. One of the most versatile and reliable burning tools available, free or paid.

Caution with Imageburn

Imageburn v2.5.8.0 is packaged with OpenCandy!
I got burnt! :mad4:
A shame as it is an excellent program!

... and it is freeware (donation) only ... there is no clean edition ...

Yes, that's crap. These are what you call "garbage payloads".

The site is also filled with ads with fake download links. LightningUK! should be ashamed of himself. I can understand the need for money to support the project, but that's the kind of thing that will make people quit using it altogether.

This was new to version 2.5.8.0. The final non-OpenCandy version was 2.5.7.0...

... and it's attached here. :)
