Best way to migrate data

...going from a 2003 Dell Dimension desktop to a new laptop?
Also, is there any potential problem restoring backed-up .mp3 files on DVD-R from the old machine (Windows XP Home) to the new laptop (Vista)?

Thanks.

How were the files backed up? With some kind of special "backup" software, or simply burned as a bunch of .mp3 files on a blank DVD?

If it's the latter, with .mp3 files on a DVD, then there's nothing to worry about. This is easy -- just copy the mp3 files to your new computer. I keep all my audio (mp3 plus other formats) on C:\Audio\ and then have them sorted further from there (music, old time radio shows, lectures, etc). You can put your files wherever you'd like to store them.

Thank you for the information. Just wanted to be sure.
