I do not have much direct experience with Windows nowadays, but when I recently wiped and reinstalled a pc I installed Panda and Malwarebytes, which both had good reviews. However, Panda was making the computer a bit slow, so I switch it to Bitdefender.

For once, your being skeptical is a good thing. Too many programs promise silly things lie "make your computer go faster". But it's BS. Lots of that software is very dangerous.

Sometimes good freeware exists.

- CCleaner is an excellent registry cleaner. https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner (download free version from FileHippo)
- Assuming Windows, Microsoft's own Security Essentials is good. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...tials-download

Sometimes payware is better. Kaspersky is excellent, as is MalwareBytes. But again, those are payware, not freeware.

CCleaner not deep clean the registry
Avira Free Antivirus is good and is superior to avast and avg?

There is no need to clean the registry. I would leave it alone.

I do suggest EMET to boost Internet Explorer's & other Microsoft applications' security. You can also enable additional security features for the browser of your choosing.

Malwarebytes has a free malware scanning program. I use it frequently.

Eh, sometimes cleaning the registry is good if you just uninstalled lots of software. It can get too cluttered, and the uninstall rarely cleans up after itself 100%. You can end up with broken extensions, etc.

EMET is new to me. Interesting. :)

You do have a point - however, in the case some sort of registry incongruities do occur, I prefer to do any necessary cleaning manually. I feel that an automated tool has much more chance to cause problems.
