Video Editing setup for 4K footage? Laptop?
 

Hello,

I am shopping for a laptop to edit my 4K footage with my new Sony AX100. The footage was shot with XAVC 4K setting at 100mbps and 30 frames per second. I have about 100GB of footage worth editing.

The laptop I am currently looking at has the following specs...

My biggest concern is the hard drive. I'm afraid 5400 rpm is not quick enough.

I am planning on using Adobe Premiere Pro and/or Davinci Resolve for color correction issues if needed. I will be editing offline as well.

Any problems that you can see with this particular laptop setup? Will this be enough to handle 4K video from a Sony AX100?

A 5400 rpm hard drive is not quick enough for 4k editing. Even a 7200 rpm drive won't cut it. if you can swap it out for an SSD drive then yes. I'm not familiar with todays laptop market. On my desktop I have an older Intel i7-2700K Quad-Core Processor (3.5 GHz), 16GB ram and an AMD Radeon RX 480 8GB which handles 4K footage well enough for editing. So I assume the specs you're looking for in a laptop should do the trick. I'm not familiar with your camera so I couldn't comment on it. Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve can make proxies for your 4k footage if it doesn't run smooth enough for editing. Just make sure you go with an SSD drive.

4K is all about power.
- Skylake CPU
- large SSDs
- 16-32gb RAM
- hardware acceleration in GPU

That laptop hits a bare minimum spec.

That 5400rom drive will work, but can be painful, especially as it hits that last half of the platters. SSD all the way is going to yield better performance.

If greenvette is editing offline does the laptop need to really handle 4k? I would think the 1TB hard drive would be more important for dealing with the tons of intermediate footage. Of course if budget is not an issue...
