Alternatives to Datavideo TBC-1000

There is currently a Datavideo TBC-1000 selling for almost TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS. Yea that's insane. Are there any tbcs that can preserve dropped frames like the Datavideo TBC-1000 and I dont have to win the lottery to buy? Also what are the differences between using tbcs that are built into my vcr and the TBC-1000?
