It wasn't a high-end VCR. Just a plain VHS, and JVC VHS was pretty terrible (unlike S-VHS).

So:
- crummy VCR
- bass boosted, aka knob "cranked to 11"

I really don't remember how old that model is, easily early 90s, maybe late 80s. Back when JVC was actually made in Japan. I saw those at Circuit City, maybe even Incredible Universe (pre-Fry's). If late 80s, then I saw it at Best.

You bought those to crank into your stereo, long before you had deep-bass DTS audio.

Similar Products Used: JVC - HRDX64U - was replaced with the Panasonic. The JVC was a lousy VCR that could not play sound except for brand new tapes. JVC would not stand behind their player even though I paid over $300 at the time. I won't buy ANYTHING that has the JVC brand on it.

I don't doubt it. Panasonic VHS VCRs were pretty bad, but the JVC VHS were worse. All bottom-barrel stuff. I'm betting that guy had the JVC for 5-10 years, like most people did back then. Most people only got a new VCR when the old one broke. $300 for a VCR is about accurate for late 80s, until maybe 90-91.
