Recommend a good, cheap DVD player?

Hi,

I was wondering if you could recommend a good, preferibly cheap DVD player.

The one you recommended before, the Philips one worked good for quite awhile until recently. It now shuts off as DVDs are playing, or the picture shuts off, then comes back on distorted. I don't know what's going on with it.

I'd go for a Blu-ray player now. Most good DVD players are gone now.
What the budget?
For about $60, there are several Samsungs.

Do Blu Rays play regular DVDs also?

60 is kinda high at the moment, but is that the lowest I should go if I were to buy one?

Yep!
DVD, Blu-ray, MKV, AVI, MPEG, MT2S, etc. It's far more advanced than any DVD player.
It streams Netflix, MLB.tv, Hulu/Hulu Plus, etc!
Wireless networking, USB ports, etc.
Right now, pre-cheapo era, you'll get a REALLY good Blu-ray player that should last for years.

Wow, they sound good. You said there's some Samsungs, do you recommend any specific model?

I would not recommend Samsung. Samsung used to be good 30 years ago, but over the past 10 their quality has plummeted; I've had a few of their DVD and Blu-Ray players over the past ten years, and they've worn out within 16 months (and to replace the laser and electronics involved would've cost more than the machines were worth.

My 11 year old or so Samsung DVD-S222 works fine. Its a good test unit as it tends to reject crappy media/burns. For example, it won't play burned Princo discs without skipping. Honestly the best DVD player is usually the $25 Wal-Mart special. They usually play PAL discs without a problem and can be region unlocked very easily.

i use my Sony Playstation 3 - one of the best blu-ray / dvd players you will find
if i wasnt a gamer i would still probably go with a Sony blu-ray player
ive bought a couple for gifts and they are fantastic

Samsung is like Sony. It has lots of things branded by them, but only some are actually manufactured by them.
The Blu-ray players, TVs, and computers tablets (like iPad) are three that are. And all are good.
Even Sony rebrands a lot of Samsung parts these days.
Samsung makes their own optical drives , which is why the player are good. Samsung is second only to Pioneer now!

I had gotten these for Christmas last year. (Never got to give them out, of course, being in the hospital and all.)
They got them this year, and they all love them. Great for streaming with a DNLA, or weatching formats on drives. Almost ANY format!
