The Issue:
Display flashes "auto" or shows "- - - - -", but unit won't power up. Worked fine as late as 2013 when it was packed up and stored in an upstairs closet. NOTE: The batteries were removed from the remote at that time, so there's NO corrosion in it.
In early December 2019 I hooked it back up, with the thought of making sure it still worked before putting it up for sale. So I put in an S-VHS tape containing a movie I'd recorded off cable. It played OK for about 30 seconds, then the unit shut itself off. So I ejected the tape and checked it for problems, but didn't find any. So I tried several other S-VHS tapes but the same thing kept happening until, eventually, it stopped responding altogether and now won't even eject the tape. I'm not a qualified tech, so the cover has never been removed and that last tape is still in there.
Other threads in this forum suggest, as I understand it, that the JVC Dynamic Drum (DD), is susceptible to age-related 'wear', and could be the problem.
