Trying to sell my Pinnacle 510 USB

Good morning,

I have a Pinnacle Studio Movie Box PLUS USB that is complete with:

- The Pinnacle 510 USB (rev 2.0) capture device
- Composite cables
- Its USB cable
- IEEE 1394 Firewire cable
- The Pinnacle Studio program on DVD
- Its user manual

I believe most people won't care for the last two points but I added it just in case. I have not used it as much as I now have an ATI 600 USB capture device and the Pinnacle 510 USB is of no use to me. The problem is that I can't really test the device because both Virtualdub2 and Virtualdub 1.9.11 crash when I try to use the 510 capture device. I have gotten to work so that it would show the preview but the preview would show the video at 1-4 fps.

*Please Note*
- I do not have this problem with my ATI 600 USB Capture device.
- The hardware on my Windows 7 computer, is in reality, Windows XP hardware.
- For the ATI 600 USB, I do not use Virtualdub, I use AmaRecTV instead.
- Even though it is running on XP hardware, the video preview and captured video is on average 29.97 fps or around that value, not 1-4 fps.
- Since the previous point is the case, I do not think the preview video on Virtualdub is 1-4 fps because of the XP hardware.

I want to make sure that the Pinnacle 510 USB is working as I do not want to sell something that could be potentially be broken or something is wrong with it. Thank you.

The problem with Pinnacle cards is that there are versions, and it's not something you'll see written on the box, or by digging into the drivers. It's on the boards, and in the chips.

When somebody tells me "it doesn't work", and known workarounds are not working, then odds are it's a bad version. Some of these tend to "marry" Studio and "fight" VirtualDub/etc. Hence why you can't just random buy from eBay, based on model alone. And hence why I crack open gear, verify internals.

510 was a long lived model, about 10 years in total. The day 1 release wasn't identical to day ~3650. I used to think the packaging gave it away, but no, very wrong.

This is no different from Hauppauge, Cypress, Panasonic, and some others, sharing long-lived model numbers where it really should have been all new models. It was lazy, for SKU and inventory, and probably pressure from retailers.

So I looked inside the Pinnacle capture card and this is what I found. [See Image: Pinnacle510.jpg] I will also type what is written on each chip starting from the right-most chip and going to the left.

As stated, some bad versions exist. eBay gambling on these cards is a bit worse than 50/50. That's just the nature of video gear, and has always been the case. None of this is new. The modern monkey wrench is condition, so all the non-crap gear is used now, no longer made.

LS, the OP is asking for your opinion on HIS card. You do sell Pinnacles (inc to me), so I assume you know a good version from a bad version.

Yes, as Hushpower said, I want to see if that is a good card or a bad card. Regardless, I still want to sell it as I do not want it so it would be nice to know if it is a good or a bad card. :D

Thank you.

Might help to add the version/release number for the Studio software.

My last post here was not generic. Based on the described issues, and what I see, it's a dud unit. As I wrote, those exist, it happens, you have to move on. I have a lot of junk gear here that cannot be resold. It's really not different than when my bananas/lettuce/etc goes bad faster than I can eat it, and it's simply disposed of. You mutter a few choice words, and that's that.

You're using the ATI 600 USB now, focus on that. :)

Note that people may buy the Studio software and book, as it can be upgraded at a $55 savings with the old key. It's not software I'd suggest, but it at least seems viable now, not junkware.

You'll have to buy it to find out... :D Haha I am only joking. According to the disc, it is version 12.0.1 of Pinnacle Studio.

Aah ok. I am glad you were able to tell me it was a dud, honestly what would I do without your expertise haha. I just wanted to know if it was worth it or if it was useless. Since it is considered useless; now I know and if someone wants the software, then I'll just sell it as if it were just the software but with everything included (cables, capture card, etc). On the positive side, at least there is one less useless Pinnacle card on the market. :D
