Internal SATA vs. external USB DVD drive, which is better?

I will buy a drive for use and storage because in the future they will no longer be manufactured and I will not be able to read and write to them

My semi-educated guess is that DVD/Blu-ray drives will be available new as external USB devices longer than they will as internal SATA devices (as with the floppy drives which preceded them), and the USB drives are a helluva lot easier to install and/or move from computer to computer. Keep a spare or two in the closet.

Internal, IDE or SATA = best.
USB is mixed bag. Some good, most bad, "slim" are terrible (avoid those).

The Samsung 3.5" bay burners were best USBs, but those haven't been made in a decade now.
Pioneers were decent, also not made new in many years.
I've not looked at USB drives in a while now. Not sure what's currently available in 2020 (now almost 2021).

Buying extra drives is wise.

In terms of future proofing, both SATA and USB will be about the same longevity, and someday will require legacy hardware and OS to use.

Lordsmurf can I buy a SATA / USB adapter and use it on the internal drive? i will buy a drive to store and read and burn my DVD discs in the future but i need a recommendation if i buy sata or USB, i am afraid to buy sata and the motherboards in the future no longer have sata connectors

USB corrector will soon be replaced by USB-C connectors.
SATA>USB, maybe, depends on enclosure chips.
I don't really have more answers for you on this. Self-research/reading required.
