I've been waiting for somebody to ask this. :)

In the world of M&A (mergers and acquisitions), company/product names can be misleading, after the dust has settled. While TY media is now using the JVC brand name, it's not because JVC took over.

Back in mid 2008, Taiyo Yuden acquired a majority stake in JVC's magnetic and optical media business. The original business report can be found in this Reuter's report: http://www.reuters.com/article/CMPSR...13450420080526

So TY owns the JVC name for media. (Another company now owns the JVC brand for its other items, a holdings company created by the merged JVC and Kenwood.)

Japanese media makers have been hit hard by the economy in recent years. TY discs were once re-branded under Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, JVC, Verbatim and several other brands. But those companies cut costs by going with cheaper (and as you know, inferior) discs from the likes of Ritek and CMC, out of Taiwan. --- (Verbatim excluded, of course, they just don't use TY discs anymore -- their MCC discs are generally superior anyhow!)

TY had no face, aside from the "That's" brand. JVC is a consumer-known name in most countries, so it's a wise move to grab it while it was available. Selling JVC media in stores may be in our future, here in North America. It's already available in Europe (official JVC/TY site).

Fear not, your TY discs are still the same great quality. :cool:

JVC said it would spin off its recording media business, which makes magnetic videotapes and optical disks, on July 1 and Taiyo Yuden would acquire a majority in the new company on Oct 1.

Taiyo Yuden said the terms of the deal would be decided based on the value of the business at the end of September. It said it would keep the JVC brand after it acquires the new company.

"We have determined it is best to fuse our technology and production know-how of recording media with JVC's brand power, technology and know-how," Taiyo Yuden said in a statement. The two companies said the new company would keep JVC's production base of magnetic media but would switch to Taiyo Yuden for the supply of optical disks.

The move is the latest example of consolidation and restructuring in the optical disk industry, as makers try to survive tough competition.

Last year, TDK Corp (6762.T), then the world's No.2 brand in optical disks, sold its brand and sales operations in recording media to U.S. recording disk and tape maker Imation Corp (IMN.N).

I just saw mention of this the other day. Great to hear nothing's changing (for us at least).

Yeah, it's worried a lot of people out there. TY didn't do a very good job of explaining it, or at telling their retailers what to say about the name change. All they had to say was "TY now owns the JVC brand. New label, same great media" and it would have prevented a lot of confusion.

Maybe with this better known brand, we can start seeing TY discs in the stores.

I went looking for DVD+RW the other day, and all that was out there was junk except for the Sony that I found at Best Buy and Staples.

Kudos to Polyline Corp for helping to spread the word on JVC TY discs, both in their blog and on twitter.
