This thread has inspired me to stock up on Sony MITs while they last. My local Fry's has a pretty healthy amount of them, both with 2008 and 2010 copyrights. Should I make a decision based on the copyright year?

It seems sensible to go with the youngest discs, yet Daxon's been gone as of this year. Might it be a good idea to avoid any product that may have gotten caught in Sony's transition away from Daxon?

Your logic is sound. I would base a decision on copyright year, absolutely. We know that 2008 was purely Daxon stock, while 2010 could be almost anything. I've not extensively looked into new Sony discs since the Daxon closure, but I'm hearing that it's Ritek media. I've not confirmed. Going from this info, 2008 MIT Sony would be good media to have stocked up, if you liked (and have good burning experiences with) the Sony Taiwan/Daxon media.

There was a point in time earlier this year when I had around 1,000 Sony MIT discs, during a period when Verbatim media was simply out of stock online or not on sale locally. The Sony, however, were easily available at a good price. After a few projects and some routine server backups, the whole stock was gutted, but I'm glad I had them.

Thanks Admin.

I'm also currently trying to find a good (and big) CD/DVD storage tower in a local store - any local store - and am coming up empty. I'm not even seeing the same models I did when I browsed casually earlier this year at traditionally reliable retailers like Fry's and Best Buy. I'm ready to give up and just take a chance online.

Between the fadeout of quality discs and quality/quantity disc storage options, the average consumer is making it increasingly harder for optical media folk to get what they need!

The average consumer is an idiot, I'm sad to say.

I don't usually get political, but I find strong correlations between certain ideologies that cross topics. I was watching Bill Maher on Friday (along with the re-run for the previous week, which I had missed), and it was mentioned that 15-20% of Americans believe Obama, our President, is secretly a Muslim with plans to turn the country into a socialist Islam empire. For the sake of argument, I'll just assume the poll he referenced was conducted with good methods. (Given the % of right wingers in this country, and % of those who are wacky, this number is probably pretty accurate, I'd say.) And if that's the case, I cannot believe that I have to share oxygen with people who are that moronic. I'm willing to bet it's these same know-nothing screwballs that have ruined a number of things (for lack of a better descriptor), such as blank DVD media. Whether they vote in a booth, or with their wallet, they vote for the things that always come back to harm them the most! I can imagine these are the same people who ask if they can "burn a blue ray DVD in the CD player" and then get mad when told that's impossible. These are the folks who run into a store to find the cheapest media available, like a Memorex disc, and then never test or play it. A few years later, they try to play that DVD, then claim that the data magically "disappeared" on them, with zero scientific facts to back it up. Instead of buying better discs, like Verbatim, they resort to another "brand" of DVDs, such as TDK or HP (the other cheap discs in the store), not comprehending that those are the same discs (CMC) like the Memorex. And even when told of their error, you get attitude and disbelief in response. Their mind has been made up, facts be damned, and the quality product gets none of their funds. The rest of us are forced to put up with their crap decisions in some way, be it 8 years governed by a doofus, or in a market devoid of good discs.

Anyway, back to the storage topic...

When Fry's doesn't even carry what you want, you're more or less out of local options. Also check Microcenter or a TigerDirect/CompUSA store, if there's one near your location. Dallas has all three of those, all off 75/Central, if you happen to be in that area.

You may have to turn to online options.
Look at the list at http://www.digitalFAQ.com/reviews/buy-dvd-cases.htm
Also look to see what www.checkoutstore.com has, the newest sponsor of digitalFAQ.com :)

Good luck! :)

Thanks Lordsmurf! I'll check out those possibilities. :)
