Should I buy this?

Just stopped by my local Goodwill in Houston and saw Sony slv-d990p in what looks to be mint condition. It has the large scart and svideo outs on the back. It looks like it was only sold in Europe because I cannot find anything but a manual on it and there are none for sale anywhere in the US or UK. Is it worth the buy at $17?

The S-Video out is only for the DVD part. It's a early 2000s samsung made VHS Hi-FI combo deck. Nothing fancy but I suppose it would be hard to beat that price for a PAL deck in the US. Assuming it's PAL since it has scard and Nicam, and what looks like a PAL mark at the bottom right.

How do you know its Svideo out for DVD only? I looked at the back and it actually had something I've never seen before, it had a DVD out only portion for the component but all the rest including svideo and scart supposedly work with DVD out. Attached is the manual description.

I didn't find the english manual, but at least in this Swedish one it says the S-Video out is only for the DVD-player, which is what it normally is in (non-SVHS) combos. There are a few VCR/DVD-recorder combos that have S-Video out for the video section like the Panasonic DMR-ES35V (and related) and LG RCT689 which I have one of. In those the video signal go through the internal analog to digital conversion though, and at least for the LG, is connected via composite internally.
If this unit indeed has S-Video out for VHS it would be interesting. |
