Vertical lines on VHS tapes, what are they caused by?

Most of my tapes have these vertical lines throughout the footage, they seem static, non moving, non flickering, just always there on about 1/5th of the screen on the left side. I dont have too many tapes but they dont show up on all the tapes. What are they caused by? screenshot attached with arrows pointing to the lines.
