Hi,

The following are screencaps taken by Moyea Video Player. These are screencaps from DVD conversions of Hi-8 tapes.

I am curious to know, on an A through F scale, A being "great", F being terrible, how they have held up in terms of image quality, and based on the image quality present, how long I can expect the original Hi8s to survive?

1) Tape from April 1991:
2) Tape from August 1991:
3) Tape from April 1994:
4) Tape from July 1994:
5) Tape from November 1994:
6) Tape from June 1996:
7) Tape from December 1997:

The images come from tapes between 1991 and 1997. The undated photos of the man in the denim jacket, and the photo closeup of the little boy come from a June 1996 tape. The closeup of the man in the glasses wearing a tanktop comes from a June 1997 tape.

Based on the stills, there's nothing unusual here.

The tapes suffer from your usual homeshot video problems: grain, off-white balance, mixed-temp color casting, color unsaturated (on some, not all). But those are mostly camera/shooting issues, nothing to do with age. Grain is a tape quality issue, and was there when the image was recorded.

Your tapes look like mine, and most others.

The true test is viewing clips. Lots of errors are invisible on stills, but obvious in motion.

Hi8 looks better than VHS, and tends to have less issues. So you have that going for you. :)
