Advice for a film scanner for 35mm B&W negatives and color slides?
 

Good Morning

It's my first time in this forum, so i hope i'm posting in the right place.

As i think many of you, i have plenty of negatives 35mm and slides, that i would like to give a new digital life.
Most of the 35mm are of the range of 1970/80 years in B/W, while the slides are of 1985/95 in color.

My objective is to obtain a good A4 print quality for a serious album, especially the historical B/W 35mm that have the greatest value.

My budget is around 500 euros, and as far as i was able to understand, no flatbed can do the job of a dedicated film scanner, no matter how good it is (let's take as example the latest Epson V850)

After checking a lot of models, i was oriented at the Reflecta RPS 10M

The tech specs are quite impressive for it's price range.
Unfortunately, being a very recent product, i still cannot find a review.

Can you help me in my choice?

Correct. A flat bed will never, ever be able to properly scan negatives.

(A flatbed can, however, do an excellent job with slides. For example, the Epson V600 with ICE. In fact, a negative is often inferior to a flatbed when it comes to scanning slides. It's just the mechanics of a flatbed vs a negative scanner at work.)

The important thing with scanners is always ICE -- the dust removal. Otherwise you'll find yourself cloning and healing images in Photoshop for half an hour or more. The Reflect 10M does NOT have it from what I can read. The Reflecta RPS 7200 does. And the 7200 scanner comes as highly rated as a Nikon V.

Not only does the Plustek cost less than half your budget, but Plustek makes decent budget scanners. Not the best negative scanners, but better than flatbeds. Plustek has an excellent history going back almost a decade now.

My own scanners are made by Nikon -- who sadly doesn't make negative scanners anymore. Gone are the days of Niko, Canon, Minolta and Polaroid scanners. They each made some impressive stuff in the early 2000s. The good scanners all cost between $500 and $1000 back then. So adjust for inflation, and convert currency, and the Reflecta 7200 is not a bad price, all things considered.

I'm in Italy, near Milano.

It's strange that the 10M does not have the dust removal feature, because it's the successor of the 7200 pro.
I'll check better the tech specs about this.

Checked now on the PDF.
The RPS 10 got it's own ICE hardware tech named "magic touch", just like the previous 7200 model.
Now I have to find out if this mode is a good one.
