Solutions for scanning negatives and prints in 2017?
 

I'm starting a couple of archiving projects, one of which is a collection of family photos. I want to scan from the negatives where available, and prints if I have no other choice. I currently have a Canon CanoScan 4200F, but it is a dozen years old, and I would imagine there has to be something out there with better quality. My hope is for this to be a permanent archive, so I want to get the best quality scans I can afford.

I've poked around some of the posts here and seen the Nikon V and Epson V600 mentioned quite a bit. Epson also has a newer model -- the V800 -- which I've had my eye on for over a year. I haven't seen that one mentioned on here, though. It has also been a year since the last discussion of scanner hardware on here.

Does anyone have any experience with the V800, or know if it is worth the $600+ price tag? Are there better options out there without getting too much more expensive? I appreciate any input you can give. Thanks!

Never use a flatbed scanner to scan slides or negatives. A good 35mm scanner will cost about $1000 (Minolta DiMAGE 5400) and up (Nikon CoolScan 5000). Forget about Epson. Or try a scanner service like ScanCafe
