VHS Playback problem (snow)
Hello guys, this is my first post ever here at this forum. May you excuse my english, as it's not my natural language. I was given a VHS tape by a good friend of mine to digitalize it's contents, it's a 20 years old VHS that has been sitting inside a blown TELEFUNKEN VCR. My friend says this VHS contains a TV show and was recorded in LP mode (as he can recall). Anyway, after taking very carefully the tape out of the busted VCR, I inserted it in my PHILIPS VCR + TBC to digitaze. The funny thing is the first thing I did was rewind it, bad luck when reached the end, the ribbon came out of the spool, so I had to open the tape and fix it with some cello-tape.
When everything was back in place, put the thing back into my VCR and all I can get is like 4 seconds good image, 4 seconds snow, 4 seconds good image, 4 seconds snow, and it goes on a on..... Funny enough, the sound is perfect and never goes out when the snow is in the screen. This is a link to explain what I get (Bob Marley): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-k...vUEY3HH8JFW0p1 At this point, I don't know if it's a head problem (other tapes playback perfect), if there's something wrong with the tape after I opened it, could be LP mode problem, my video doesn't show the "LP" sign when the videotape is playing, could it be that is not LP???? Thank you very much guys, if you have any idea about what this problem might be I will be very grateful. |
It's a tracking problem, Your VCR cannot play it you need another VCR that can handle speed irregularities. Always post model numbers of your equipment to save time.
Another alternative is get the concert on DVD, I'm pretty sure there is a copy somewhere. |
Thanks latreche34, there's a local TV show in that tape as well, apart from the Bob Marley concert, I just used it as an example. The TV show that comes after the concert is what my friends want to preserve (He was interviewed in that show)
Thinking about it, could it be that the original VCR had a misalignment head issue when recorded???? Can I missalign my own VCR on puupose to try and playback this tape correctly???? By the way, my own equipment is a PHILIPS VR462 VCR along with a VIDENICS MX-1 (I use it for Time Base Correction) My buddy's equipment was a TELEFUNKEN M3090G, both VCRs are PAL. |
That's not alignment problem, it's miss tracking, get a JVC or a Panasonic VCR or send the tape to someone who can transfer it for you it's cheaper than buying a good VCR.
|
Which JVC or Panasonic model would be a good choice (best deal between price and quality) I would like it to be S-VHS as well.
|
Check the VCR recommendation section in this forum.

I found a JVC HR-S6850EU on eBay for 100€ include shipping, there's no info about this unit in this forum, would it be the answer to my pray?? What's your opinion about this video???? Thanks again latreche34

It's okay, not top of the line but it's a mid level S-VHS deck, it has automatic and manual tracking as most JVC decks by using PR up and down buttons, so that might help but you wouldn't know for sure until you try it.
Have you tried to clean the control track head on your current VCR? |
Yes, I've cleaned the heads and the control track head of my VCR, the curious thing about it is I can watch perfectly clear any other tape. Anyway, this PHLIPS I have has also auto and manual tracking. I will try with another videos before spending money without knowing for sure. Thanks by now...
