Passthrough works on the in>out signal. The DVD writer itself does not matter.

You do not use the ES10/15 itself to make DVDs. That's not what "passthrough" means. It refers only to the signal being routed in, processed for line TBC(ish) + frame sync (not frame TBC), then passed back out.

The ES10/15 is not a TBC replacement, but it works great for anti-tearing, and is ideally placed in a workflow chain with an actual frame TBC chasing it. However, the ES10/15 can be part of a 99% TBC(ish), when paired with DVK/5000 units. The only drawback of a TBC(ish) is getting ES10/15 side effects (posterization, aggressive NR even when "off", possible PAL luma hotness).

I don't think I've ever used my ES15 to record DVDs.
I've used my ES10 very sparsely, less than a dozen DVDs ever, always for testing only, and I've had it since it came out in 2005.
