One of the things I am wondering about is this black grease that has been used in this part of the deck. I have heard that the wrong type of grease (e.g. grease made for metal gears) can lead to abnormal wear of plastic gears.
I also do not know if that grease was used in the factory during original manufacturing or if the deck was improperly serviced in the past.

Yeah it should be possible to find vcr with the same mech for not too much, it was used in most Panasonic VCRs (other than in the US) in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Lubricating it thru it's life would of help.but I think it's
Just a poor design the metal teeth gear against the nylon.
When it's fully loaded theres pressure against it from the tension
Spring. If the metal gear was twice as thick would of help

When I add grease to vcr gears where at least one of the two gears is made of plastic, lately I use a silicon-based white grease with teflon. I hope this is ok. The drawback of this grease is that one 50g tube costs more than 1400JPY (about 13 USD).
