Video8 tape will not load?

Forgive me if I am the wrong location with this post.
I was just beginning a 5 tape capture of vacation footage from 1990. when I got to tape 5 it would not load. Enters deck, tray shuts, it sits there a while then rejects it. No tape winding on the head. What to look for to salvage the tape? Tapes and deck working as normal. It's just this tape.
deck... sony evs900
tape maxell EX-M P6-90

If only it were that simple!
Not due to tape or stickers on the shell. Anybody else? Although the brake seems to work from the outside, I am not sure of how it works inside. The braking of the wheels is my suspicion as the culprit. But I don't know, I've never disassembled one of these.

Certain Sony 8mm tapes had "sticky shed syndrome". NJRoadfan has posted about this before, read his posts.

Didnt you write that the problem tape is a Maxell, ie: not a Sony?

2many 12-05-2022 12:53 AM

Yes it is maxell. And there was nothing I could find relevant to my issue in the thread I found. I have not watched the tape to load with the cover of the deck off, but I think the door on the cassette is not opening. All seems good with it when I manually operate the release lever. If I disengage the brakes the reels spin freely.

Those Hi8 decks were pretty lousy. Use a Hi8 camera.

I'll see if it can load in an alternate unit. There is a camera available with which to check this. However, in the last 20 years the cameras have become little to unused. Who knows how they will react. Stand by...
