Panasonic AG-1980 maintenance steps?
 

Recently acquired an AG-1980 that appears to have been inactive for a long time.

Here's a bullet list for easy reading:

- Insert tape, unit immediately ejected it. Tried this several times, and eventually it stayed.
- Tape played fine
- All controls appeared to be working
- Rewind tape, but tape would not eject and displayed F04 error.
- Unplugged unit, and replugged (after 5mins)
- Tape ejects.

Question: Since the unit appears to have been sitting for a while, are there any initial maintenance steps that should be taken?

- Lubrication points (if yes, where?)
- What kind of lubrication?
- Anything else that should be done?

I suspect if I'm going to keep it, I'll have to get a capacitor replacement job, as these seem to have an expiration date (which has likely passed).

not familiar with this model..
does it have a belt that drives the loading mechanism ?
If so is it slipping? when it stops when trying to load in is the motor pulley still turning?

my days of repairing vcrs was in the 1980s and 1990s.. closed my shop end of 1999 and work for a contractor in semiconductor research lab.
Vcr training at the zenith school in Chicago trained on boat anchors Sony beta JVS vhs.
so very possible i work on one or that mechanism like it in another model.
i still have the repair interest so i read thru different forums.
I like helping others and if are nearby tell them how to repair.
I go to different sales ill keep and eye out for one.

your problems could be complex but as an easy & fast poor man's solution i 'd check the mode switch (cleaning contacts) and also perhaps belts ( sand paper them a little so they have a better grip).

The mechanism in the AG1980P has only one belt, and it's a toothed drive belt so it's not something you want to sandpaper. There is a belt tensioner that can be tightened if needed.

Needing to jog the mechanism a few times like you had to is something I've also experienced with decks with this mech so might be pretty normal. Not sure what causes it though.

The main trouble point of this mechanism (Panasonic K mechanism) is the loading motor worm gear coupling which can crack. This results in the vcr failing to get very far in the loading cycle as the motor will just slip.

The mode switch is kinda hard to clean properly, I'm not sure if it's doable to open it without damage so I've just doused in in electronic cleaner. Solder joins on the head drum assembly can sometimes be bad and cause dropout/dirty head like symptoms on playback (might be more of a thing on PAL Panasonics but not sure). Quasipal here on the forums has a video going over maintainance of it but I can't find the post right now.

AG-1980 transport issues are not fun. What you're seeing is an early sign. It usually progresses to eating tapes at any time, so beware. This is almost always mechanical, and almost never caps.
