Hello everyone, a while ago I bought this player from an online listing.

I noticed on some tapes it shows some noise visible especially on dark colors. I'll attach a picture so you can see it.

I had a similar problem with the S-VHS model that came an year after (NV SV120), even though it was nowhere as bad. In that case someone in this forum told me the caps needed to be replaced.

On the NV HS930 unit I have the capacitors look fine but that's not always the case they're good.

I'd like to know what's the issue before recapping it.

Play a tape where you see the noise, pause the tape, if the noise freezes, it is not the VCR, it's the tape. If the noise motion continues while in pause it's the VCR.

- eBay? Never good, with few exceptions in EU/UK.
- Marktplaats? Scammers thrive there, beware. A Craigslist in EU.
- Something more reliable? For example, VCRshop should accept return for repair, if it came from him, having arrived DOA.

Heads are always possible, too. And that gets expensive, must usually buy a donor deck. Hence costs of Panasonic decks, in general.

- For sale in the marketplace: TBCs, workflows, capture cards, VCRs

If the tape is paused and the noise continue to move, next step is, Does it do it only when the tape is in playback/pause/fast search mode or does it do it when there is no tape inserted at all (passthrough)? In this step we are trying to isolate the video heads pre-amp.

So if the noise is exhibited only when tape is in and the mechanism is engaged in one of the playback modes, BUT there is no noise in passthrough (line IN -> line OUT), this could indicate the head pre-amp has a problem, If the other way around it is the video processor board, If both then further testing steps needed to isolate the faulty component.

I did the testing. The noise doesn't move when I pause the tape. Do note though that it's not this specific tape as I did the same test with more tapes.

It is true I bought it on eBay second hand from an UK seller, but it was for a decent price so I kinda gambled on it. I first wanted to see what features this deck has, for an example it has a couple picture settings that are not available in the next two S-VHS models.

It's your tape then, The VCR is fine. Just a note, when someone is trying to help you, just listen to them, don't just assume it's not the tape and refuse to follow the procedure when in fact it is the tape and the VCR has nothing wrong with it.
If you are still confused post sample videos so we can assist you better.

Then why the same noise doesn’t show up on other VCRs? I played the same tapes (more than one) on 10 other machines and the noise is just on that one.

Can you show us what you see? Even with a smartphone taking video of the TV screen using the same tape across other VCRs in both playback mode and pause mode, We can't help you if we don't see what you are seeing.

Sorry for the late reply. Here's a clip of the tape being paused.

As I said it happens with almost every tape I put in. The same tapes do not show this noise with other VCRs.

I'd like to know if it's the heads or not. If I just need to replace caps or other components it gets easier.

EDIT: From further testing I noticed the noise shows up way more when the 3D DNR is off or on edit mode. The TBC doesn't make any difference on this issue

Just because I haven’t done it yet it doesn’t mean I’m uninterested.

In fact I already had some captures of the same tapes I tested for a long time in my own online drive for backup, but I can only share them through PMs.

I doubt it's damaged heads, that tends to give pretty drastic effects on the picture. The later panasonics like the NV-SV120 and SV121 have a bunch of reports of bad caps (including the SV120 I have myself), but idk if that was an issue on the slightly earlier models like the HS930.

The NV SV120 model I bought a while ago had a blown cap I replaced, the only thing that got fixed was the rewind mechanism somehow.

I think we talked about this through DMs that also my unit of that model had the same issue, but it was far less noticeable.
