Panasonic DMR-EZ47V tape mechanism partially loading?

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

A mate gave me 2x DMR-EZ47V combo units he asked me to get going. The power supplies both need re-capping as is the usual case with these.

They both now power on however one of them seems to not take a tape all the way. It doesn't go all the way down. I pulled the mechanisms of both out to compare. When running the motors manually I noticed this part of the mech (circled in red) not moving at all in the bad unit which results in the tape not being pulled around the drum, even with some gentle encouragement to assist the motor.

Mode select switch doesn't seem to be the issue as it doesn't work in both chassis.

Any ideas here to get this going?

Maybe old grease jamming things up.

I dismantled what I could and cleaned off old grease and applied some new stuff. It actually does move but the part I circled earlier needs a bit of pressure just to get started, then it runs through smoothly. The good unit is smooth as, I don't think its a lubrication issue now

Mode switches are fine, I tried the bad mech in both units and it doesnt work in either. The good mech works fine in both.

Have you checked for cracked gears on the motor ?

If you have to push it first to get it to move that indicate that the first one or two teeth are broken on the slider or the gear itself, Take it a part and look.

Came back to this after some time, the little gear on the motor had the most hairline crack through it, applying some glue resolved the mechanism issues. Thanks for the tip. I've also taken measurements to 3d print a spare for future failures.
