Purchased Sony SLV-679HF, mystery plastic part?
2 Attachment(s)
I purchased this unit off of facebook just trying to upgrade to something stereo from my mono panasonic. Of course he told me it worked perfectly. When I got it home I noticed something was rattling around.
I'm not sure what it's called but the rubber tensioner drum fell off and luckily I was able to find the small plastic tube that retains it. The main issue is this white plastic part that looks like it has some kind of pad on it. It has a broken tip where a spring went. The VCR seems to run normally. Insertion, ejection, play, pause, stop, rewind and fast forward all seem to work fine. I'm not too worried about replacing it because I can CAD it up and 3d print it but I just need to know where it goes. Thanks in advance |
Look around the take up and supply reels may find a home for it there

I did a little googlin' and this guy seems to have the same exact issue with the same vcr. Luckily he shows where the piece goes.

Great
Good luck |
That could cause the VCR to eat tapes, It's a brake arm, With no brake when fast forwarding and stop, the tape will spill over and if the take up reel doesn't catch up with a pinch roller you get an excess tape and when you try to eject it the tape will catch somewhere and rip.

Thank you for all of the info. Although the redditor tried to describe where the part went it's a little difficult to follow along. Since it was 4 years ago the link he posted also doesn't work anymore. I'll keep searching for a photo or video of the deck to see where I can fit it.

Check the service manual, It shouldn't be that hard to put back on, You may have to start from a far off angle to align the pegs with the holes on the chassis and drop the piece down, then re-attach the spring to its hook on the mechanism's chassis so the piece would lock on the spindle or be close to it depends on the design.
If I would have to guess, it should go as illustrated in the attached picture, You can make a hole in the white piece and add a small hook to it to re-attach the spring end to it. https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/att...1&d=1706804518 |

Thank you very much!
I was able to heat a small flat head screwdriver to pierce the wall. If this was a more solid part I would have tried to thread in a small 2.5mm screw. It's not the most elegant solution but I bent a small piece of wire to re-attach the spring. edit: scrap that I guess... It can't protrude above the nylon part otherwise it interferes with the tape. I'll have to come up with another idea. |

Right on, That's a good fix for the spring, That's what I meant in my previous description, You must be a mechanical engineer like me and read my mind, Lol. Anyway, to check if the spring is applying enough tension, Use a tape with full take up reel, fast forward the tape until it reaches full speed and hit stop, The reel should stop immediately.
