* Solved - I don't seem to have permissions to delete my post but found this has already been covered:

Working to improve my VHS captures I purchased a used HR-S7800U. When I switch to the s-video source I noticed the text appears fuzzy. In component the text is crisp.

I replaced the s-video cable and nothing changed. Is there anything else simple I am missing here?

It's good to compare not just the texts between the two but also the pictures. Sometimes the "higher def" capture reveals more actual picture detail but with the penalty of more unwanted noise. I believe that's why many VCR's had a picture "sharpness" control to allow the user to decide which tradeoff suited their own preference.

If we want the maximum picture detail we may have to tolerate more unwanted noise. If we want the least noise we may need to tolerate some loss of picture detail. So again a tradeoff.

And post processing may or may not be able to remove the noise without also removing some picture detail.

But also, the menu and display letters and numbers generated digitally in earlier VCR's were not perfectly drawn because that would have taken up more of the limited digital memory at that time. It wasnt a fault in the VCR's.
