This $10 unit from Goodwill worked fine until it shut itself down, and now it's completely dead. Not even the clock display when plugged in. I noticed that the top of the unit felt hot above the PSU side after I used it to digitize a two-hour movie. The fuse is intact and none of the barrel-style caps in the PSU area look dodgy, but one of the flat square ones shows as hot under my IR camera despite there being no clock.

I have plenty of other VCRs, so I don't need this one for anything. I just wanted to use is as a learning experience. Does this model have any caps that are known to be prone to heat death?

Probably shorted out capacitors, a capacitor can look ok bit that doesn't mean it's good, Test the ESR or recap everything to be safe.
