You can't get the result with the "like/dislike" method. First you need a properly calibrated VCR. It means you got your reference VCR from well known technician or shop. I have test tapes and experience with Panasonic but, until now, no experience with JVC. I bought a 7722 from vcrshop and then two mint condition 7711 (exactly the same, only black, 7722 is silver) in local sales in small towns in Germany. All 3 work identically, and the picture and sound is identical from both the test tapes and the other VHS/SVHS cassettes. It is possible to tell if your VCR is working properly if you have a calibrated the same model reference VCR to compare it to. Otherwise it is a waste of time. PS recap should be done of course.

This gave me something to think about... I don't have a test tape (which will probably be challenging to obtain) and an oscilloscope, so I need to find out if there is a place nearby that can calibrate JVCs (if there even is one). However, I have to emphasize that I am satisfied with the image quality of the first DVS2 and the 7700. What remains unclear to me is when the vcr processes the image too much:question:

Test cassettes and other calibration equipment will not give you result you need if you are not familiar with particular VCR model. Each has it's own signature. For example - Panasonic NV-FS200 has excellent G2 mechanism and good TBC, picture is closest to JVC from all Panasonic. NV-HS1000 is good, with K mechanism, but is a bit sharper. NV-HS950 is very sharp, but it does not mean it is bad - there are SVHS tapes what are reproduced excellent. So they all are different. You can buy a reference VCR from vcrshop, calibrate your similar VCRs and then sell it for the same price. I believe I will sell 7722 soon, because I do not need it any more, I have 2 exactly the same 7711. I recapped 7722 PS, because vcrshop do not recap them. And bought remote separately because it came without it.

It's simple, put the tape with noise in the VCR, hit pause, if the noise freezes, it's recorded on tape, if it keeps moving, it's a faulty VCR.
