Panasonic NV-FS200 playback problem

Hi guys,

I bought a FS200 off ebay and I have a little issue on playback. I think maybe the heads may be worn. I've already cleaned them manually.

When the video plays, I will see random sharp lines like shooting stars appear on the image. I've attached a video which shows you what I get.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to rectify this?

I see quite a few errors here. But before I go anything further... Is the TBC on?

I still get those sharp lines across whether TBC is on or off.

Alright, so the other errors DO clear up with the TBC engaged? If so, that's good.

Now then, do these tapes have the static "magnetic dropout" lines (technical term = "dropout") on other VCRs?
If so, then it's the tape.
If not, then you may be looking at damaged video heads.

There are some advanced restoration methods that can remove these, in software.
I've more or less perfected how to do it this past month, and hope to share this in a guide very soon.

I don't get them in another vcr. Must be the heads.

I'm guessing it will be hard to get these replaced. I have an NV-FS88 which look to be similar heads. Doubt I would be able to transplant these into my NV-FS200 though.

You can get FS-200 upper drum from http://www.video-heads.cdlens.com/ or http://www.donberg.ie for about 50EUR and installation is fairly easy (my "guy" does it for 60€). I have used but working (no dropouts) upper drum for sale if you're interested in trying something like that. 15EUR + s&h.

edit: FS90, FS200 and V8000 share upper drm VEH0467. I doubt FS88 is compatible because it is not listed as such.

Thanks for the links, very helpful. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I think I'll buy one of those new ones as I have a lot of restoring to do.

When replacing the upper drum, does this need calibrating with a ossiloscope?

juhok 11-26-2010 04:23 AM

I've been told that the "phases" need calibrating and that sounds like something that needs oscilloscope to my ears :)

I have FS-200 service manual, if you need it I can drop you a link.

If you could attach the FS-200 PDF to this post, that would be excellent.

I don't know if there's any copyright issues with these? Internet is full of services selling these manuals for high prices and I'm sure they don't own the copyrights either tho. Personally I think these should be available for free and if there's interest I could upload all my manuals. Have AG1980 & different JVC models for example.

Indeed, upload any and all manuals you have. :)

Go ahead and make one new thread per device brand. Several of us have done that in the recent past.

For example:

Add to existing threads, or make new ones as needed.
I would love to have service manuals for JVC and Panasonic 1980 decks!

thank you for these.

Back to video heads discussion, can one buy upper video drums with heads installed from like JVC, has anyone done this?

admin 12-01-2010 11:07 AM

It's an excellent question for which I sadly do not have an answer. :(
Calling Panasonic would be my best current suggestion.
