Fair Value of HR-S9900U VCR? s-video plug not working?
I recently picked up a HR-S9900U on ebay for $150 shipped. However unaware to the seller, the video is black and white through s-video unless you put some pressure down on the cable. The seller has agreed to a partial refund and was wondering what I thought would be fair. So I ask you what do you think is a fair price? Everything else appears to be in good working order.

That's an easy $50 fix. You could ask for half of it back, to be safe ($75 refund). And honestly, that's steal for the 9600/9800/9900 unit. Those really are worth a good $300 or more, so you already picked it up for half price!
The problem is that the input boards on JVCs are fragile is you plug/unplug/replug too much. It's why I use s-video extension cables on mine, which are always plugged in. I plug/unplug/replug from the extension instead. If those ever go bad, it's a simple $5 or less fix from Monoprice. Jots Electronics in Arlington TX is where our JVC decks have always been repaired. They repaired one for us back in 2012. I don't think they board had to be removed, just re-soldered in multiple spots. Stress separated some of the bonded connections. I'd have to fig out there tickets to see what was done, assuming there's repair notes on it. If you're savvy with a soldering pen, you could maybe do it yourself. |
yes JVC I/O's are very easy to damage - especially if you use crappy fitting cables like Monster.
i recently sold a fully working JVC D-VHS only to have the buyer file an ebay case saying the right audio rca connectors dont work. (right side audio is fine through the HDMI) i havent got the deck back yet, but suspect the solder joint is broken from using too tight fitting cables. |
I asked for $60 and the seller accepted. I have a co-worker who is good with electronics and said he could do any soldering that may be needed. Thanks for saving me some coin!
