Sony SVO-9600 tape drive motors runs slow
 

My Sony SVO-9600 svhs vcr turns tape very slowly. The video is as if in slow motion and distorted. I cleaned the pinch roller and that seemed to help for a time but its doing it again. The deck has had error "5E n-01" since I bought it used, but i can get around this by powering off and on while holding the play button.
My main concern is it is feeding tape too slowly.
Does anyone know how I can correct this?

It could be dried or polluted grease making the mechanism malfunction. The machine could likely use a re-oiling, too. Also, be sure to check that the belts aren't worn out, or sticky. I'm sure you're aware of this, but those industrial VCR's are fairly old, and a good amount of them have been beaten close to death. Most of them need a good tune-up to even work these days. Fortunately, yours *sounds* like it only needs to have its parts freed from being stagnant for so long.

I'd use White-Lithium grease, and sewing-machine oil.

thanks for your feedback DC. The pinch roller assembly is dropping down into place
but seems to have no contact at all with the tape. something is not in position here but do not know enough to tell what is out of place. I have to learn more about these machines.

the error code "SE n-0F" means.

If you could find the service manual, it'd surely have the error codes listed in it.

hello DC, I took your advice and splurged on a service manual and that answered a lot of questions.
I saw the gear relationships for the pinch roller cam and saw gears out of wack. I removed one of the gears and this allowed access to retime the cam gear and everything is good with no errors.

It's good to know that you got the machine to work! Would you be able to take a picture of the gears that were out of place? It might be of help to someone else in the future.

the image shows the vcr after repair.
the original problem was that the tape was not being pulled into position for the pinch roller to drive it.
the tape was dropping down from the cassette behind the guide pin that bring the tape forward to the pinch roller.
the cam gear (white gear#1) was in the wrong position
to resolve this...
first, be careful to note the position of all gears. (take a picture)
remove the circle clip on the black (drive gear#2)
remove this gear, the white cam gear can now be rotated
rotate the white gear until the guide pin (under blue dot) is centred in the cam gear's slot (red arrow)
now, the tape will drop down from the cassette in front of the guide pin.
