How to check a DataVideo TBC-1000?

I have a former co-worker who has a DataVideo TBC-1000 that he is willing to sell for a reasonable price. Is there any way a definitive test can be performed to determine if the unit is working properly? The only way I can think of is attempting to copy a Macrovision-protected tape and verifying that the Macrovision is removed.

- How does the signal quality look on a JVC blue screen? How transparent is noise?
- Watch for flicker.

The Macrovision thing isn't a test for this unit.

Never plug it in until verifying the proper power plug is in use: 12V 1.25~2.0 amp (varies).

Excuse my video ignorance but what is a JVC blue screen and what is meant by "transparency of noise"?

Do you have a JVC VCR, and the screen is blue with no tape playing?
Any blue screen works, but JVC tends to be best.

Transparent = no noise.
