Capturing VHS to DVD using pass through?

I am converting my VHS tapes made in the 80's from an old Magnavox camcorder. I am using the s-video output from my Toshiba DVR670KU VHS/DVD recorder, a Diamond VC500 capture device, and VirtualDub to capture. The resulting brightness seems to flicker intermittently. Could this be due to poor stabilization in the Toshiba unit? Would using a pass through unit such as the Panasonic ES-10 or ES-15 eliminate this type of anomaly?

What is your actual workflow, though? The title of the thread is "passthrough" which implies you're feeding another VCR into the DVR670KU. If you're using the Toshiba as the playback VCR, it shouldn't cause flicker unless you do a "Dub" at the same time.

I am not using a pass through at this time. I am currently only using the s-video output from the tape in the Toshiba unit alone. That is why I posed the question if using a pass through with one of those Panasonic units would fix the issue. The flickering that I get is intermittent in portions of the screen. I have attached a small clip exhibiting the issue. If I use the composite video out the flicker is not there but the quality is poorer.
