Damage at top corner of VHS footage?
 

Hi everyone,

although I suspect that I have already seen my problem at a forum like this, I do have several vhs tapes with this problem: Damage on the top and corner of the video tape image. Does anyone know if this is due to the aging of the vhs tape or can it be solved?

That's "tearing" (technical term).

Simple to fix, using the ES10/15 for passthrough.

The error has nothing to do with aging. It was simply misrecorded when the tape was made. The top of the signal is skewed, and the VCR cannot lock onto the image properly.

Very common issue.

No details were provided on the workflow used to capture this clip. In a previous post you mentioned using a Philips VR1000 into a Kramer TBC. The fix may be as simple as disabling the line TBC of the VCR, or removing the Kramer from the workflow. http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...sed-input.html

Connect the VR1000 directly to a TV, with line TBC disabled. Odds are, there will be no tearing. Turn on line TBC. If tearing appears, there is your cause.

It definitely isn't due to the VCR being unable to "lock on". The flagging is caused by mis-interpretation of the video signal being output. This can happen at:

• the VCR's own internal video decoder (TBC/NR circuit)

The Analog Devices PDF only notes head-switching as the cause of flagging, while the repair book says wrong playback tension can cause it.
