Opened unused VCR still good after years?

Hi,
Found a JVC VCR, that is opened, but according to the seller, it is unused.
I was wondering if VCR get worn off by time, even if they are not used?
I don't know how much time it has been opened.
Is it better to buy a refurbished one with guarantee or this unused one?
I am thinking that all the good models that this forum members suggested, can be found used, but probably have been used a lot by the former owners.

Model matters.

Unused can sometimes be in worse shape, as the gears/etc were not exercised in the past 20 tears (2 decades).
VCRs age, used or not.

Alignment drifts, gears can crack and seize the same.

Rubber still rots and stretches.

I bought a supposed "new in box, unused" JVC about 2 years ago. It arrived smelling like an ash tray. Nope! Ruined! That POS went back to the seller.

Most eBay/Facebook/Craigslist decks are abused, not merely used. Never trust "tested" and "working" claims, either. If the seller sees any lights, it works. Any image, of any quality, and it's "tested". So, not really working or tested. (Sometimes you can't even trust parts decks, which has been an issue I've run into many times in the recent past.)

I may have a deck left, refurb'd, but not sure yet. (It won't be budget priced, one of the better decks.)
