VHS to digital color pixelation?
 

I am converting some 1990's VHS-C tapes to digital using the August VGB100 video grabber, a Targa DPV-5200x VCR and processing video through VirtualDub. Am having serious issues with color and have been searching for days.
Here is how it is playing.

1. Is there an easy answer to this? I feel like I'm missing something simple. It does not happen when VCR is directly connected to the TV so the tapes themselves are OK.

2. I don't even know what to call this issue. I've been searching for problems related to pixelated color. Is there a correct term for this 'distortion'?

What standard your tapes are? PAL, SECAM, NTSC ....?

Both the VCR and capture card are terrible. The (lack of) quality is expected with those devices.

It may also be PAL/NTSC settings issues. But even with those corrected, quality will suffer, due to (again) the lousy VCR and capture card. Garbage in, garbage out.

Yeah looks like wrong color format.

The August VGB100 seems to be the same as the Diamond VC500 unless they changed the chipset, so it's not going to like the raw signal from a VCR very much in any case.

@latreche34 Most of the tapes are Maxell HGX-Gold TC30, and from U.S., so I'm assuming it's NTSC. But I'm sure the VCR is European, so probably PAL, as I am in Poland now. I guess that matters, huh?

You need a US NTSC VCR or a multi format VCR with true NTSC 525 @ 29.97 fps, 3.58MHz, Not NTSC playback which is PAL60 30 fps, 4.43 MHz.

True multistandard VCR's bear the logo "VHS 525/625" or "S-VHS 525/625" and they don't convert from one format to the other unlike those international VCR's.

I'm pretty impressed with my VBG-100. It matches the quality of my non-name Phillips 713 PCI card (which of course might also be cr@p, but the captured video looks pretty good and realistic to me). :)
