Lines appearing in captured video, what's wrong?

I'm using a Tevion ATI clone with Virtualdub and the Huffyuv codec. I don't have a VCR with TBC yet nor any other devices to enhance the video. I'm using a Windows 7 desktop with no AV or other software to bog down the CPU or ram. The GPU is onboard Nvidia and absolutely nothing special (if that makes a difference).

The preview of the incoming video signal looks good and the audio is crisp and clear. The VHS tape (pre-recorded pre-macrovision) is in excellent condition as well as the Toshiba VCR I'm using. I know TBC and the rest of the recommended gear is recommended, but for now I'm just fiddling with what I have.

I took some screenshots of playback on a better PC to show how the results are. I also took screenshots of the same VHS tape that was copied on a Magnavox (Funai) direct to DVD recorder at the highest quality with the same VCR.

Forgive me for being ignorant on this matter, but why does this look worse with the lines and whatnot? How can I make this better or am I simply lacking the necessary equipment?

That's interlace. It's supposed to be there. :)

Ah, that's what that term means. Gotcha. Hopefully I'll get the hang of the terminology soon.

So is the DVD recorder de-interlacing the video?
