Date + time stamp from Digital8 or Hi8 video?

I am trying to extract the Date/Time from the following and can't figure it out. I've seen some examples using Avisynth, but was hoping there has been an easier solution to this since the early 2000s.

Camcorder
Brand: Sony
Model: DCR-TRV140
Output: Firewire (also have S-Video/RCA)

Tape
Brand: Sony
Model: Hi8 MP 8mm Video Cassette

I can't even seem to figure out how to get it overlaid on the LCD screen.

If you use ScenelizerLive it will display the date and time in the preview window.
