Captured video shows small black streak lines?

1 Attachment(s)
I have captured around 30 videos via Virtualdub 1.9.11 and have been very pleased with the results so far. I ran this tape and this is my second attempt to capture this and I saw small black streak lines that lasted for a duration 2-3 minutes and occurred about 4 times throughout the tape. The first time I captured this tape was about "20 tapes ago" and did not have these streaking black lines.

Is this a sign that the VCR needs to be cleaned?

I have attached an .avi 3 second sample video for your convenience below.

What VCR are you using? Does it happen on other tapes? Black streaks can indicate worn heads (or damaged if it's very bad) (or misadjusted RF filtering on the VCR but that's not adjustable on newer models). I've seen newer JVCs do this on some tapes regardless of head status though while other VCRs don't show them on the same tape, so maybe that's what you're seeing too.
It can also be caused by issues with the vcr recording the tape causing it to be baked in though.

I am using a JVC SR-MV45 that has been refurbished by one of DigitalFAQS members. This does not happen on other tapes. When I captured this tape for the first time it did not have those black streaks. This was my 15th tape that I ran in the VCR upon receiving it.

I wanted to recapture it again and that is when I noticed those black streaks. I was wondering if it was because the heads were dirty after playing 30-ish tapes?

I just played a couple more tapes that I successfully captured and I now do see the black streaks on those as well. Not all but some tapes.

It's related to the signal the video stuff in the VCR picks up from the heads so cleaning the heads may be of help if it suddenly happened yeah.

Ok, I have 99% isopropyl alcohol and foam swabs on the way and will try this again this weekend.

There are some VideoHelp posts by jagabo that mention how comets can be caused by a build-up of static electricity, but I don't know whether that's a possibility in this case. The threads I came up with in a quick search are all talking about white streaks, not black.

msgohan, this is still good to consider in case cleaning the heads don’t address the issue. I will be sure to keep y’all posted.

I'm pretty sure Lordsmurf now uses plain paper to clean heads (he used to use chamois). I can't find his post that said so though.

I wanted to give y’all an update.. cleaning the VCR via the TGrant website’s instructions took care of the problem! Thank you for sharing all of this information. Back to capturing many more tapes! :)
